It would be easy to conclude that Glenn Schumann was born to coach football. Entering the world in Valdosta as the son of coaches, Schumann has been on a seemingly preordained path to the sidelines.
Schumann comes from a long line of coaches. His father Eric, after playing safety for Alabama in the mid-70s, spent 20 years in college football as a defensive coordinator. Among his coaching stops were UAB, Tulane, SMU, East Tennessee State, Valdosta State, Livingston, New Mexico and Troy. Schumann’s grandfather Jack Haskin was a coach on the first football team at Florida State University and is a member of the FSU Hall of Fame. In addition, Schumann’s mother, Dr. Sherry Schumann, is a former collegiate coach and Athletic Director.

Following his father to Alabama, Schumann became involved as an undergraduate assistant , then as a graduate assistant before becoming Director of Player Development and Associate Director of Player Personnel in 2014. When Kirby Smart accepted the opportunity to return to his alma mater, Schumann was his first hire.
Just to make sure that I have made the point that Schumann is a rising star in coaching:
Schumann is considered a fast-rising star in the coaching realm. Having just experience at Alabama and Georgia, he’s young but very good at his job. While at Alabama, three coaches were in the defensive game-planning meeting: Nick Saban, Kirby Smart and Schumann. That should tell anyone all he/she needs to know.

I’m not sure if it is accurate to label Schumann as Kirby’s protege, but the head coach certainly thinks highly of his young assistant. During his first two years coaching inside linebackers at UGA, he was fortunate to have Roquan Smith to develop. Development is a strong suit and continues with senior Monty Rice and the rest of the talented inside linebacker room.
Georgia fans will enjoy Schumann’s talent as he continues to recruit and develop Dawgs, but like most of the young coaches on Kirby’s staff, Glenn Schumann is destined to be a head coach. The only question is whether he grabs a head coaching offer from soon or, like his mentor, builds his resume and waits for the ‘right job’. Georgia fans are pulling hard for the latter.
