Georgia’s hammer throwers swept the first two events of the Yellow Jacket Invitational in Atlanta on Friday.
Senior Shelby Ashe hit a mark of 200 feet, 11 inches on her fifth attempt in the hammer to win the women’s competition and stayed undefeated on the year. Her junior teammate, Asianna Covington, matched her performance from the season opener last weekend and finished second with a throw of 191-11.
On the men’s side, junior Alex Poursanidis posted a season-best mark of 225-9 to win the hammer. This relocated him to fourth on this year’s national performance list. True freshman Denzel Comenentia, who edged Poursanidis for the victory in the season opener, finished with runner-up honors with a sixth and final toss of 220-7.
“I was pleased with the overall performances, which were very close to last week’s performances,” said Bulldog throws coach Don Babbitt. “We just completed a heavy week of training so to be able to maintain our competitive standard while being this fatigued is a good sign.”
The men’s shot put starts Saturday’s action at 10:30 a.m. The first event on the track is the 4×100-meter relay at 12:30 p.m.
