Georgia junior Denzel Comenentia has been named the SEC Men’s Field Athlete of the Week following his performance at the Clemson Invitational over the weekend.
Comenentia, a native of Amsterdam, has now earned SEC Athlete of the Week honors three times in his career. He is the defending SEC indoor shot put champion and was the runner-up at the 2017 NCAA Indoor Championships.
Comenentia began the meet by launching his second attempt in the shot put a personal-best distance of 65 feet, 11 inches, which won the meet, took over the national lead, put him No. 5 on the world list and surged him into the No. 3 spot in the school record books.
He ended his weekend by making nearly an eight-foot improvement to his career best in the weight throw on his sixth and final attempt to win by more than two feet. Comenentia’s effort of 73-6.75 pushed him to No. 3 on the national and world list and No. 2 on the UGA all-time top-10 list, trailing only Andras Haklits’ monstrous toss of 80-2 to win the 2001 NCAA title.
Comenentia and his teammates will return to action at the Razorback Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., on Jan. 26-27.
