Georgia track and field’s Denzel Comenentia has been honored by the Southeastern Conference as the Men’s Freshman of the Week following his performance at the Georgia Invitational, according to a league announcement.
Comenentia, a true freshman who arrived in Athens from his home in Amsterdam in January, was honored as the SEC Freshman of the Week once during the indoor season. He finished the season as an indoor First Team All-American in the shot put.
Comenentia won his second meet of his career in the hammer throw at his team’s final home meet in Athens this past Saturday. Featuring three throws in his series that measured 214 feet, 4 inches or better, he won the competition by nearly 21 feet after his sixth and final toss traveled 218-9. Comenentia remains at the No. 9 spot on the national list with a top effort of 227-9.
The 6-foot-2 thrower also reached 61-7.50 to take seventh in a shot put contest that included his training partner and 2016 SEC indoor champion Ashinia Miller, former Bulldog and 2012 Olympic bronze medalist Reese Hoffa and 2004 gold medalist Adam Nelson. Comenentia is currently ranked No. 13 on the national list in the shot put at 62-9.25.
Comenentia is the fifth Bulldog to earn an SEC weekly honor outdoors. Sophomore Keturah Orji garnered the Women’s Field Athlete of the Week honor last week while sophomores Karl Saluri and Mady Fagan swept the Field Athlete of the Week awards on April 11. Senior thrower Ashinia Miller was named the SEC Men’s Field Athlete of the Week on March 22.
Georgia opens the postseason in Tuscaloosa, Ala., with the Southeastern Conference Outdoor Championships on May 12-14.
