Georgia fifth-year senior Garrett Scantling has been named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) South Region Indoor Men’s Field Athlete of the Year.
Scantling, a native of Jacksonville, Fla., owns the nation’s No. 1 heptathlon score (No. 6 in the world) after winning at the Razorback Invitational with the only 6,000-point score in the country this year (6,020).
Then, he became the first competitor to win three Southeastern Conference heptathlon titles after scoring 6,003 points to pick up a 211-point victory over his teammate Karl Saluri last weekend.
Scantling’s SEC performance included a personal best of 52 feet, 2 inches to win the shot put and a winning finish in the pole vault of 16-8.75, which equaled his personal best.
