Both Georgia men’s and women’s track & field squads captured the national runner up title in this year’s indoor championship held at the Virginia Beach Sports Center in Virginia Beach, VA.
So much hardware, so much success!
Across both men’s and women’s, the Bulldogs had multiple dominating individual performances that led to team finishes in second for both squads. Headlined by Elena Kulichenko’s tie for first in the women’s high jump alongside Texas Tech’s Temitope Adeshina, the two made for an elite photo atop the podium as they held hands with the winning trophy in both of their grasps, each clearing the 1.94m bar.
Meanwhile, Will Floyd claimed two golds at the indoor championships in the men’s 400m with a 45.43 time and as the first leg of the 4x400m men’s relay. Floyd now owns the 2023, ‘24 and ‘25 titles at the indoor 400m, claiming this year’s title by .01 seconds.
Alongside Floyd, Xai Ricks (second leg), Shemar Chambers (third) and Ervin Pearson (final) led the Dawgs to the 4x400m title. On the women’s side, Georgia’s 4x400m team claimed runner-up with Haley Tate, Dejanea Oakley, Aaliyah Butler and Michelle Smith on the baton. Butler and Oakley also claimed 400m silver and bronze, respectively.
Riyon Rankin placed second in the men’s high jump, clearing the 2.19m bar on his first attempt. Rankin’s leap is the first top two finish for a Bulldog in Nationals since 1986. Micah Larry went 7.89m on the long jump, securing a fourth place finish and an All-America honor. As for the women, Kaila Jackson finished in bronze position in the 60m with her third top three finish in a row at a 7.15 time following an All-American finish in the 200m where she ran a 22.96, good for seventh and third straight All-American honor in the event.
The Georgia women were rated No. 5 while the men were rated No. 12 ahead of the indoor championships, both greatly exceeding expectations with their runner-up finishes.
Now, the outdoor season begins. First stop: Atlanta for the Yellow Jacket Invitational hosted by Georgia Tech at the George C. Griffin Track & Field facility this Friday and Saturday, March 21-22.
