ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia’s track and field teams have started the outdoor season with two weekly Southeastern Conference awards following the Yellow Jacket Invitational, according to a league announcement.

Senior Bryan Kamau has been named the SEC Men’s Co-Runner of the Week for the first time in his career and junior Denzel Comenentia garnered the Men’s Field Athlete of the Week award outdoors for the second time since 2016. Comenentia was also named the Men’s Freshman Field Athlete of the Week once during his first outdoor season.

Kamau, a native of Snellville, Ga., shaved more than a second off of his personal record in the 1500 meters to be the top collegiate finisher and third overall in his season debut. His time of 3:43.96 leads the nation and is ranked third on the school’s all-time top-10 list. It is the best since Simon Ngata set the school record of 3:42.82 at the 2004 SEC Championships.

Comenentia, a native of Amsterdam, Netherlands, launched the longest hammer throw of his career (238 feet, 3 inches) to top former Bulldog All-American Alex Poursanidis for the victory at the Yellow Jacket meet. Comenentia’s mark leads the nation by more than five feet and ranks second on Georgia’s all-time top-10 list, trailing only Andras Haklits’ monstrous toss of 260-2 at the 2002 Georgia Throws Invitational.

Georgia returns to action at the Texas Relays in Austin, Texas, on March 28-31.
