Georgia rising sophomore Tara Davis earned the bronze medal in the long jump at the IAAF World Under-20 Track & Field Championships in Tampere, Finland, on Friday.
Davis, a native of Agoura Hills, Calif., became the first American to medal in the women’s long jump at the meet after soaring 20 feet, 10 ½ inches on her sixth and final attempt. She had matching jumps of 20-6.25 in her series which also would have secured third place for the Lady Bulldog.
This performance came after Davis moved from No. 4 to No. 3 on the school’s all-time list by winning the USATF U-20 title with a collegiate personal-best mark of 22-0.25. She was fifth in the long jump (21-3.25) at the 2018 NCAA Outdoor Championships to help the Georgia women take second overall. Indoors, Davis registered a third-place finish to complete a historic 1-2-3 showing in the event for the Lady Bulldogs as they captured the 2018 national team title.
Two Georgia signees also competed at this week’s IAAF World Championships. Kyle Garland scored 7,451 points to take seventh in the decathlon while Sterling Lester scored 5,478 to finish 16th in the heptathlon.
