Georgia senior Zack Sims led off the Florida Relays with a runner-up finish in the 5000 meters during the meet’s first day in Gainesville, Fla.
 
 
Sims, a native of McDonough, Ga., recorded a time of 14:17.84 to finish second in the 56-man field. There were two sections of the men’s 5000m and a pair in the women’s 5000m as the Gators’ three-day meet cranked up.
 
 

“It was a very solid night for our runners,” said Bulldog distance coach Patrick Cunniff. “It was just a little too hot and humid to run fast but overall we competed very well. Zack Sims looked very strong and battled to the very end. Jon Moses and Daniel Navarro took total control of their race, pushed each other all the way to the line and were rewarded with big (personal records). I also thought Kingsley Green did a nice job in her first 5k on the track for us.”

 
 
Another trio of Bulldogs went 14th, 15th and 16th overall in the men’s race. Sophomore Jon Moses (14:43.79) and freshman Daniel Navarro (14:44.72), who finished 1-2 in the second heat, both left with career-best times. Senior Sid Vaughn crossed the line one spot behind Navarro overall after completing his laps in the opening heat in 14:47.08.
 
 
In the women’s race, true freshman Kingsley Green was the first Lady Bulldog across the line, taking 29th overall with a time of 17:38.97.
 
 
Also of note, former Lady Bulldog Bridget Lyons, who won the 2010 SEC 10,000m title, won the 5000m after clocking a 16:29.59.
 
 
Action begins again at the Florida Relays at 12 p.m. on Friday with the women’s hammer.
