Georgia track and field sophomores Karl Saluri and Mady Fagan have been honored by the Southeastern Conference with weekly awards, according to a league announcement.
 
 
Saluri was named the SEC Men’s Field Athlete of the Week while Fagan was awarded the SEC Women’s Field Athlete of the Week honor following their performances at the Bulldog Decathlon and Spec Towns Invitational, respectively. Both are first-time winners.
 
 
Saluri, a native of Kuimetsa, Estonia, turned his first decathlon as a Bulldog into an eye-opening performance as he took over the national lead with a career-best 8,108 points to win. This output represented a 611-point improvement to his previous personal record.
 
 
Winning both the 100-meter dash (10.66) and the 400m (48.34) during his 10 events, Saluri shot to No. 3 on the current world list and No. 3 in the Georgia record books behind another pair of Bulldog 8,200-point-plus scorers from last season (Maicel Uibo, Garrett Scantling). Saluri had to run a 4:29 or better in the final event (1500m) to score 8,100 points and qualify for the 2016 Olympics in Rio. He finished second in the event with a 4:27.43 to earn his spot on the Estonia national team alongside his decathlon training partner and Bulldog teammate Uibo.
 
 
Fagan, a native of Los Gatos, Calif., lined up versus two of the world’s top high jumpers in former Lady Bulldog Levern Spencer and former South Carolina competitor Jeannelle Scheper at the Spec Towns meet and held her own. Fagan made her season debut and soared to an 81Ž4 inch personal best during her outdoor collegiate career to be the top collegiate finisher (third overall) with a 6 foot, 11Ž4 inch clearance.
 
 
Fagan’s second-attempt clearance vaulted her to No. 3 on the national list and No. 5 on Georgia’s all-time top-10 list. Spencer (6-3.50) and Scheper (6-2.25) ended up in the world’s top seven in 2016 after taking first and second, respectively.
 
 
Saluri and Fagan mark the second and third Bulldogs to earn weekly honors this outdoor season. Senior thrower Ashinia Miller was named the SEC Men’s Field Athlete of the Week on March 22.
 
 
A group of Bulldog distance runners return to action at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., on Thursday and Friday.
