UGA Baseball: Early home run leads to Bulldogs fifth straight loss

Andrew Gist had a much better night than his stat line shows

The UGA baseball team had a stronger night on the mound than the numbers show, but the offense could not help overcome the pitching unit’s mistakes in their 8-1 loss to Vanderbilt.

Bulldogs’ starter Andrew Gist worked through the first three innings of the game, but his first mistake came in the fourth inning and it ended up being the one that cost him. Gist gave up a two-run home run to Commodores’ left fielder Stephen Scott. Scott’s home run would give the Commodores a lead that they would not give up.

The Commodores put the game to bed, for the most part, in their four-run fifth inning that the Bulldogs’ pitcher Gist almost found a way to work out of it. With two outs and the bases loaded, Gist got third baseman Will Toffey to hit a deep fly ball to right field that seemed playable. However, right fielder Tucker Bradley could not find the ball in the light and it fell allowing three runs to score and put Toffey on second with a bases clearing double.

Gist would eventually allow Toffey to come around to score in the inning, but the damage had already been done. Center fielder Jeren Kendall would hit a solo shot in the top of the seventh and first baseman Julian Infante hit a solo shot in the top of the ninth to give the Commodores some unneeded insurance runs and extend their lead to seven.

The Bulldogs kept up with the Commodores bats but failed to convert their hits into runs. The Bulldogs only run came off of a solo shot by shortstop Cam Shepherd, but they had an opportunity to add on more. The Bulldogs had eight total hits and every player that got a hit, besides Shepherd’s home run, ended up being left on base.

Although the Bulldogs did not have any errors on the record, Bradley’s mistake ended up being very costly and gave their opponents a lead that they could not come back from in the game. The Bulldogs also must find a way to score runs if they hope to have any success against this Commodores team.

The Bulldogs will face the Commodores next in a doubleheader on Saturday, with the first game being played at 2 p.m.
