The University of Georgia begins the Fall semester on Thursday, and here’s a review of how the Bulldogs fared in summer league action.
 
 
Catcher Michael Curry helped the Strasburg (Va.) Express to their second straight Valley League Championship this past Friday. In the playoffs, Curry batted .320 (8-for-25) with a home run and seven RBI. For the summer, he batted .305 with 11 doubles, three home runs and 19 RBI in 37 games. Also in the Valley League, infielder Mitchell Webb played for the Charlottesville TomSox. He batted .266 with four doubles, two home runs and nine RBI in 27 games.
 
 
Pitcher Kevin Smith and outfielder Keegan McGovern played for the Orleans Firebirds who advanced to the Cape Cod League Playoffs. Smith led the squad in wins (4) and strikeouts (37), posting a 4-3 mark and 2.78 ERA in 14 games including two starts, spanning 32.1 innings. McGovern appeared in 33 games and tied for the team-best with three home runs while batting .156 with three doubles and eight RBI.
 
 
Brothers Logan and Drew Moody, along with Addison Albright and Adam Goodman had the good fortune of playing for the Savannah Bananas in their inaugural season in the Coastal Plain League (CPL). They set a CPL attendance record with more than 80,000 fans cheering them on during the summer including 17 sellouts out of their 22 home games. They averaged 3,659 fans. The club has advanced to the playoffs (that start Wednesday). Logan Moody appeared in 33 games and batted .351 with 17 RBI and eight stolen bases. A first baseman/outfielder, he is the younger brother of pitcher Drew Moody. The elder Moody went 2-1 with a 2.90 ERA in 31 innings pitched including two complete games. Albright made seven appearances including two starts, going 0-3 with a 6.92 ERA in 13 innings. Goodman pitched 13.1 innings, notching eight relief appearances and a 1-0 record, one save and an 8.10 ERA. Also in the CPL, first baseman Adam Sasser played for Lexington County. He played in 31 games with 29 starts and batted .240 with one home run and 11 RBI.
 
 
In the Florida Collegiate Summer League (FCSL), pitcher Trevor Tinder was a standout for the Winter Park Diamond Dawgs. He led the league with 52 strikeouts in 47.2 innings while posting a 3-3 record and 3.96 ERA in eight starts. Also, he made the most of his lone plate appearance of the summer, smashing a three-home run on July 31 against the Sanford River Rats.
 
 
In the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL), Blake Cairnes and Andrew Gist were key pitchers for the Newport Gulls who advanced to the playoffs. In the regular season, Cairnes posted a 1-1 record and 0.96 ERA in 15 appearances. In 18.2 innings, he walked eight and struck out 24. Gist tallied a 4-3 record and 3.83 ERA during the regular season. He made eight starts and pitched in nine games for a total of 47 innings with 13 walks and 42 strikeouts. He won a playoff start this past Friday, going six innings and allowing just one earned run with one walk and seven strikeouts. First baseman Patrick Sullivan and pitcher Ryan Avidano were in the NECBL as members of the Keene Swamp Bats. Sullivan played in 38 games and batted .209 with five doubles, three home runs and 19 RBI while Avidano went 3-2 with a 4.66 ERA in nine starts with 19 walks and 39 strikeouts in 46.1 innings.
 
 
Infielder Trey Logan helped lead the Piedmont Pride to a runner-up finish in the Southern Collegiate Baseball League (SCBL). They went 35-11, and he batted .237 with four doubles, one triple, 24 walks and 24 RBI in 45 games. Also Logan Moody, Tinder and Cairnes earned midseason All-Star recognition in their respective league while infielder LJ Talley played on a summer league team in his hometown of Folkston.
 
 
Seven Bulldogs off the 2016 club turned professional, and outfielder Stephen Wrenn has already been promoted in the Houston Astros organization. He batted .282 with nine home runs and 27 RBI in his first 36 games with Tri-City (Short-Season A) in the New York-Penn League before being moved up to Quad Cities (Class A) in the Midwest League. Pitcher Connor Jones (0-0, 2.35 ERA, 3 starts, 7.2 IP, 2 BB, 11 K) is in the Gulf Coast League with the GCL Yankees. Pitcher Heath Holder (0-0, 2.61 ERA, 20.2 IP, 7 BB, 23 K) is in the Pioneer League with the Grand Junction Rockies. Pitcher Bo Tucker (3-1, 4.43 ERA, 11 appearances, 20.1 IP, 8 BB, 21 K) is in the Pioneer League with the Orem Owls. Pitcher Robert Tyler is in the Northwest League with the Boise Hawks and yet to make his debut. Catcher Skyler Weber is in the Arizona League with the AZL Athletics and batting .172-0-3 in 19 games. Infielder Nick King is in the New York-Penn League with West Virginia and batting .257-0-4 in 11 games.
 
 
Georgia is slated to begin fall practice in mid-September. The 2017 baseball season opens on Feb. 17.
