UGA’s cross country teams garnered three of the four SEC weekly honors following their sweep at the Gene Mullin Invitational over the weekend, according to a league announcement.
Redshirt sophomore Jonathan Pelham was named the SEC Men’s Runner of the Week, senior Lauren Hovis was awarded the conference’s Women’s Runner of the Week honor and Millie Bergey garnered the SEC Women’s Freshman of the Week accolade.
This gives the Bulldogs six weekly honors this year. Sophomore Jessica Drop has been named the SEC Women’s Runner of the Week twice while Michael Hans was named the Men’s Freshman of the Week once in 2017.
Pelham, a native of LaGrange, Ga., and nine teammates ran and dominated the Furman home meet, scoring 18 points to finish ahead of the second-place Paladins by 62 points. Pelham clocked a 5k time of 15:47.61 to take second overall (top collegiate finisher). This marked his first scoring showing for the Bulldogs.
Hovis, a native of Dacula, Ga., led the Lady Bulldogs to a win by 35 points in the Gene Mullin Invite by finishing the women’s 5K race in 18:49.21. She was the third collegiate finisher and fourth overall, finishing in the scoring column for the first time in her Lady Bulldog career.
Bergey, a native of Cumming, Ga., raced in just her third collegiate race and scored for the Lady Bulldogs in their convincing win at the Furman meet. She recorded a 5K time of 19:40.25 to finish 11th overall.
Georgia will return to action at the NCAA Pre-Nationals in Louisville, Ky., on Saturday, Oct. 14. This marks the Bulldogs’ final regular season meet before the SEC Championships arrive in Athens at the UGA Golf Course on Friday, Oct. 27.
