To say the month of November has been a brutal stretch for the Georgia football team when it comes to its 2019 schedule would not be overstating the obvious. With back-to-back-to-back SEC games against Florida, Missouri, and then Auburn, all of which have been physical “slobber-knockers,” the Dawgs come into Saturday’s last home game versus Texas A&M a little banged up, especially on the offensive line.

Sophomore offensive lineman Cade Mays and offensive guard Ben Cleveland have been battling and playing through injuries. On Monday’s UGA football press conference, head coach Kirby Smart updated the status of both Mays and Cleveland in his opening remarks.

Kirby Smart gives an update on the status of several injured Bulldogs during Monday’s press conference for Georgia vs. Texas A&M.

“With that, I’ll give a couple of updates on the injuries. I don’t ever know exactly who you’re asking about, but Cade [Mays ] is banged up. Don’t think he’s going to be able to practice today,” said Kirby. “But we think he’s going to be able to play and he’s going to be able to hopefully practice Tuesday.”

“Ben [Cleveland] is still fighting the injury bug, too, on a lower extremity,” added Kirby. “We’re hopeful he’s able to go.”

That was followed up with another update after practice on Tuesday as the team continued to prepare for the Aggies, and the news sounded more positive than on Monday.

“We’re hopeful that all those guys are going to be able to play.  Cade (Mays) has been out there working,” said Smart. “Ben (Cleveland) has practiced, so we’ll be in a good spot.”

Kirby added, ”Cade didn’t do much yesterday.  He was out there, but he did a lot more today, as far as reps and things like that.  Hopefully, he’s gonna be able to go.  He didn’t do a lot yesterday, but he did more today.  Hopefully, he’ll do more tomorrow.”

In addition to Mays and Cleveland, wide receiver Lawrence Cager has been another player has been doing battle with the injury bug, having played through a shoulder injury most of the season. Kirby said on Monday that he was cleared to practice.

“And then (Lawrence) Cager will be cleared to practice,” said Kirby. Just be a matter of whether he can sustain.”

On Tuesday, Kirby also updated Cager’s status after two practices were in the books.

“He’s been good. I wouldn’t say he’s been as good as he’s been the last couple of weeks but he’s repped,” said Smart. “He’s practiced and we’re trying to help him recover.”
