BenKellam AlphaDawg Greg Poole Definitely believe Kirby drops hints on purpose. The RB situation is one.

  2. BenKellam

Greg Poole BenKellam I guess I was mainly referring to how he seems to bring it up any chance he can get.

  3. Greg Poole

BenKellam It is a tactic, but his frame of reference is Alabama. Any statement about depth is a comparison and Kirby’s frame of reference is the depth necessary to grind through an SEC season and playoffs. He’s right, UGA is not there.

  4. BenKellam

AlphaDawg Greg Poole I’m convinced its at least partially a recruiting tactic. All these kids hear is how the depth needs to be improved and it makes UGA seem more attractive in terms of early play time. Now thats not to say that we arent lacking in depth in some areas. Because we are.

AlphaDawg Greg Poole We’ll be able to judge for ourselves in a little more than a week.

  6. AlphaDawg

Greg Poole I’ve seen so many mixed articles about OL this spring my head is spinning

PTCDawg DawgByte MMCSDAWG dawgmum Greg Poole Here’s what I mean by a couple of seasons turn things around.

I think coaches that come into programs and have instant success (ex. Malzahn, Mcilwain, Meyer etc.) are anomalies in the coaching world. We’d all like Kirby to be able to take this program and land us in Atlanta in Dec., but personally I think that’s unrealistic and I won’t be judging his first years success based on that criteria. I’ve always believed we have to allow a new coach to get a couple of recruiting classes to get the players who fit their philosophy, before they can realize sustainable success.

Bulldawg Bob2 PTCDawg yeah, but see by missing on Brown at 95% the odds are that you should get the next 19 in a row right!! Right? :>)

PTCDawg You raise a good point. There is probably not one specific factor that resulted in the collapse of the offensive output, but more of a combination of several factors.

There was definitely some division in the coaching staff that contributed to it, and we will never know how much Brian Schottenheimer’s hands were tied if at all by Mark Richt, or how much of the offensive scheme’s were his. My best educated guess is he was running Richt’s system with his own tweaks, but that is just conjecture on my part.

There were some definite head scratching type moments:

    1. Lack of utilizing TEs as receivers
    2. After Chubb went down and Michel got banged up some, why we didn’t see Marshall and A.J. Turman more; although, there might have been more behind the scenes with Turman. We will never know.
    3. Playing Bauta vs. Florida and then not letting him use his dual-threat capability with option reads, ect.

However, all that is in the past now. I’m very curious to see what the offense will look like under Jim Chaney.

PTCDawg  While nothing is ever 100% for sure when it comes to college football recruiting, especially until the prospect signs their LOI and/or FA papers and are on campus enrolled in classes, I am 95% confident that Thomas will be a Dawg.

Keep in mind though that I was 95% confident in Derrick Brown being a Dawg last year as well before the coaching change, and he ended up across the state line at Auburn.

  11. CLTDawg

PTCDawg I agree, but something was definitely wrong schematically, too. I think there’s no doubt that we went more conservative after Tennessee to try to grind out games an win. Richt mentioned that in a press conference at some point…but I think it still has to fall on our OC (or HC, ultimately) that we were that dependent on Chubb that once he was gone we had no recourse at all. We weren’t just being conservative, we were completely crippling ourselves out there.

We were running Sony Michel, one of the most versatile players in the conference who is electric in space, right up the gut on play after play, and really only targeting Mitchell in the passing game. We weren’t a threat to defenses at all. That shouldn’t happen, and it goes back to the initial install of the offense in the Spring and in Fall camp. Gotta have other options offensively, and that’s on Schotty.

  12. PTCDawg

DawgByte MMCSDAWG dawgmum Greg Poole I agree that its a bit silly to think UF is a make or break game for a first year coach. But I also dont get the idea that it will take a couple of seasons to ‘turn things around’.

  13. PTCDawg

Schottenheimer takes a ton of heat, and understandably so. I am not sure, however, that it is completely warranted. Our O was very different, and not in a good way, after Tenn. I can totally see Richt deciding after losing Chubb and to UT on the same day, that our best chance to win going forward, which is ALWAYS the main criteria, to be going conservative on offense and limiting mistakes. I fully think its POSSIBLE that the ineptitude of the O was determined by the game plan approach that ended up winning 10 games. I’m not defending him, just saying I could see the possibility, or it could be he just sucked after that.

MMCSDAWG dawgmum Greg Poole Interesting article on SEC Country about the Florida game being a must win for Kirby & Co. this year. I don’t entirely agree with the notion that a loss to Florida this year would mean a lot of fans jumping off of Kirby’s bandwagon. I think the fans realize he needs a couple of seasons to turn things around. I do think the leash is pretty short though.

  15. Bulldawg36

I think he will decide after the masters. Nobody likes to do anything but golf while it’s going on. U0001f600

  16. RobDawg

I can’t be there this year but can make my own egg salad sandwich and watch it live on Masters.org while I work

  17. ZippyMorocco

MMCSDAWG ZippyMorocco haws1178 I worked for a division of a F500. Our union went on strike the first day of deer season every year.

  18. AlphaDawg

Bulldawg Bob2 Don’t know if UGA will be on the good side when all said and done, but it feels nice to go toe to toe on recruiting every once and a while with Bama. Now we just have to do that on the field

  19. MMCSDAWG

dawgmum Greg Poole MMCSDAWG Something tells me we will have a very good class this year…  And like my signature used to say, Win, and they will come!  Gotta win on the field as well, but I have every confidence that Kirby will get the job done!
