The Georgia men’s golf team is coming off of a recent win at the Linger Longer Invitational on Tuesday, March 18. Hosted at The Landing at Reynolds Lake Oconee, the team had dominant days in round one and three, shooting a combined -37, and eventually finished -30 after a tougher round two with five Bulldogs inside the top 10. Sophomore Grayson Wood led the team shooting -9 and tying for second on the individual leaderboard. The men’s team currently sits ranked No. 30 in the nation by the NCAA

Last weekend, the Bulldogs placed 11th at The Goodwin in San Francisco at The Stanford Golf Course. The men’s team will soon head to Savannah for the Ford Collegiate on April 14, hosted by Georgia Southern.

The Georgia women’s team, however, has a big event looming in the near future. The Bulldogs will host the 53rd annual Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic on April 8-9.

The late Liz Murphey was noted as a champion of women’s sports during her lifetime. She was in charge of UGA’s women’s golf club before the sport was officially added to the university varsity list in 1978. From 1978-1986, she led UGA to 21 team and 18 individual titles, including top 10 national championship performances in 1979 and 1983.

Murphey won the 1984 National Coach of the Year Award and is a member of the Collegiate Golf Hall of Fame. The Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic began in 1973 as the Georgia Invitational before being renamed in 1995.

Last year, former head coach Josh Brewer shared his thoughts on hosting a tournament in today’s world. Erika Brennan is the new head coach, but Brewer’s words still hold true.

“You want to make the event feel special, and in today’s world, people add bells and whistles to do that,” said Brewer. “I just like to play golf and provide them with a great test. I think the NCAA giving Regional bids every three or four years and the number of national championships we’ve hosted speaks to the fact that our course is pretty special in its own right.”

The Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic will feature 36 holes on Tuesday, April 8, and 18 in the final round on Wednesday, April 9.
