UGA’s Austin Smith has been named the SEC Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, the league office announced on Wednesday.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Smith, a senior, had a strong two matches for the sixth-ranked Bulldogs last weekend, going 2-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles as he helped Georgia punch its ticket to the ITA National Indoor Championships, which run from Feb. 12-15 in Charlottesville, Va.
[su_spacer size=”40″] The Cumming, Ga., native clinched UGA’s 4-1 win against No. 44 Memphis on Sunday with a three-set victory against the Tigers’ No. 87-ranked Andrew Watson at the top singles spot. Smith bounced back to deliver the victory for the Bulldogs after falling in the first set and then falling behind in a second-set tie breaker.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Teaming with Ben Wagland, the 10th-ranked doubles duo went undefeated in two matches this past weekend. The Bulldog pair downed UC Santa Barbara’s Nathan Eshmade and Miles Seeman to clinch the doubles point and give Georgia an early 1-0 advantage.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Smith and the Bulldogs will be back in action this week as they head to the West Coast for the SEC/Pac-12 Challenge. Georgia will play against No. 12 UCLA on Saturday at 4 p.m. ET, before facing No. 8 USC at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday.
