Greg is closing in on 15 years writing about and photographing UGA sports. While often wrong and/or out of focus, it has been a long, strange trip full of fun and new friends.

Dawgnation89 I think he is but don’t bank this one until it happens (I don’t think it will).

The 247 article is not free, but just trying to if this is new information? Would this be the information you heard last week EC?

Greg Poole MMCSDAWG Me too!  My Mantra as a Div-O in the Navy was, ATD, do the job right and do it right the first time.  If your doing your best and paying attention to detail and something happens, I’m good with that, but if your trying to take a short cut or half-a$$ing it, then the hammer is going to fall!  I only want to do a particular job or evolution once,  not over and over because you tried to take a short cut!

  4. Greg Poole

MMCSDAWG His recruiting is starting to pick up – he was smart to decommit. He will get more offers as NSD approaches

MMCSDAWG  The question of game-prep and gameday coaching is not worrisome to me, but we just do not know until they actually do it. I want to see the kind of ATD (attention to detail) that they have clearly shown in recruiting and spring practice organization transferred to actual games.

Greg Poole I still have a soft spot for the kid from Jefferson, if we fail to get one of the big time Tackles other than Thomas, I’m all about going after C. Chandler, I want him more than T. Gray.  But I will trust Pittman and company to make the right choices!

  7. Avon Barksdale

Gosh can you imagine if we add him to the mix as well?? Can’t think of a potentially bigger recruiting month we’ve ever had! Maybe even INCLUDING pat signing days!

  8. MMCSDAWG

Greg Poole If this coaching staff can coach 1/2 as good as they recruit, we are in for the ride of our lives these next few years!  Win, and they will come.  That is the only ingredient we are missing and I believe that will change in the very near future!

Georgia picked up a commitment from http://s.sbnation.com/click/7084657.846/aHR0cDovL3d3dy5kYXdnc3BvcnRzLmNvbS8yMDE2LzcvNC8xMjA5MzM3MC9nZW9yZ2lhLWZvb3RiYWxsLXJlY3J1aXRpbmctbGF0cmF2aW91cy1icmluaS1jb3JuZXJiYWNr/56c35a748cc2b2c31d8b4576B6cdd5b7d. Brini is only the second commitment in Georgia’s 2017 class that hails from outside the Peach State. The Bulldogs also picked up http://s.sbnation.com/click/7084657.846/aHR0cDovL3d3dy5kYXdnc3BvcnRzLmNvbS8yMDE2LzcvNS8xMjA5NzMzMC9nZW9yZ2lhLWZvb3RiYWxsLXJlY3J1aXRpbmctUm9iZXJ0LWJlYWwtTm9yY3Jvc3MtSU1HLUFjYWRlbXk/56c35a748cc2b2c31d8b4576B0aedb29b, who is from Georgia but is transferring to the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla.
The Bulldogs now have 10 four- or fives-star commitments. Only Alabama and Ohio State have more, and those are the only two ahead of UGA in the overall rankings. Kirby Smart’s staff is doing a great job with in-state talent.

Avon Barksdale  I have him on my list to announce this month – still think he will be a Dawg. Lucas Rogers is more familiar with him than I, however.

  11. MMCSDAWG

Avon Barksdale I don’t know…  it seems like he might have cooled a little, but with Kirby and crew, I’m pretty sure we will be happy come February with our signing class!

  12. MMCSDAWG

Reddawg13 Heart can’t take much more than that Herschel video!  Definitely got my heart pumping this morning!

  13. Reddawg13

BahitsDawg MMCSDAWG PTCDawg Long arms especially help with guys that are speed rushers.

  14. Avon Barksdale

What do you guys think is going on with Jacoby Stevens?
Some sources say he’s now wide-open. Others say he may still be announcing this month. Seems like those two things are contradictory. Is it a smokescreen and he’s all Dawg still??

  15. Reddawg13

Enjoyed watching the Herschel highlights! Who is next, Hampton, Hearst, Worley, Moreno……?

  16. BahitsDawg

AlphaDawg 1mandawgpack it is an awesome clip.   That scar guy going backwards and the false bravado of the other scar player then pushing Sony like… you can’t do that to my bro!  waa waa

  17. MMCSDAWG

    AlphaDawg 1mandawgpack I’ve watched this clip 50 times now…  do I need help???? ###

  18. DawgByte

MMCSDAWG PTCDawg Bam, I think you nailed it.
One of the knocks on Big Ben is he has short arms for a guy of his height, which is why they’re projected him a OG instead of OT, where he played in HS.

  19. DawgByte

1mandawgpack I played RB in HS with a cast surrounding a broken wrist. Can’t say it was pain free. The good news his he has 8 full weeks to heal.

  20. MMCSDAWG

1mandawgpack AlphaDawg Right, he did play with broken bones in his hand/wrist last season as well.

  21. 1mandawgpack

AlphaDawg 1mandawgpack  The injury and the play you posted happened a year apart.  That won’t be the case with his broken forearm.  That said, Sony has had a number of injuries that he has played through during his time at UGA, so if anyone can do it, he’d be high on the list.

  22. converted 1981

Reddawg13 Greg Poole Won’t matter right now.  It will go up as his size and strength does as will UGA’s Size and Strength………………………..and Championships.

  23. 1mandawgpack

BahitsDawg MMCSDAWG PTCDawg  As long as the arms are extended straight in front of the torso, that’s not grounds for a holding penalty.  When arms get extended in a position that is other than straight in front of the torso, that’s usually grounds for a holding call (unless, of course, UGA is on defense as I saw numerous plays where our DL were being held over the past few years with no flags thrown – a great example is the play against Vandy where Ray Drew was ejected for targeting – he was being held on the play as the OL was trying to drag him down from behind with no holding call).

  24. 1mandawgpack

Assuming Sony’s injury isn’t severe (i.e., it’s a pretty clean break), he should be back for UNC, particularly if they stabilized it with pins/screws to help it heal more quickly.  However, my concern with a broken arm is twofold:  a) his mentality and being prepared to take a good hit on that arm and have confidence in it (I broke my forearm during a HS football game and it took me a while to learn to trust it again) and b) ball security as it’s hard to practice taking care of the ball with little to no contact, which is what I expect from the coaches for Sony throughout the Fall practice season.

  25. 1mandawgpack

PTCDawg BahitsDawg  Most pulling guards use straight-line momentum to fulfill their blocks.  A fast guy like Netori will definitely help as it will assist him in getting to the “second level” to block a LB or DB, which will increase the odds of RBs breaking long runs.  However, he may not have the ability to get lateral quickly, which is what an OT needs in blocking a speed rusher on an almost certain passing down.  There can be a significant difference in being fast and being quick.

  26. converted 1981

Greg Poole OK.  Somebody Please splain sumthin to me.  IF!  Andrew Thomas is the #49 Player in the Nation but ONLY the 10th best OT is there 9 other OT’s ahead of him in that group of 48?  If Not I am Cornfuzed…

  27. BahitsDawg

AlphaDawg PTCDawg I read that many programs always try to recruit tackles and move them in to guard and center if they either don’t work out as tackle.

  28. MMCSDAWG

BahitsDawg MMCSDAWG PTCDawg Punch!  I was fortunate enough to coach with a great former NFL lineman in Dave Widell.  He is a massive man at over 6-7″ and his arms are LONG!  He taught out pop warner kids how to bunch and the importance of punching with your thumbs up.  I had never learned as much as I did from him about OL play!

  29. PTCDawg

BahitsDawg PTCDawg Thanks everyone, very helpful. I too thought faster guys would be the pulling guards but maybe thats just a small part of the gig. Not sure I ever considered the ‘quick feet’ but can see how that would be an asset on the outside. I just kind of thought the best guys usually played Tackle but figured there had to be more to it than that.

  30. AlphaDawg

PTCDawg Good question, I also would like to know.

So what’s the characteristics for Tackle
and what’s the characteristics for Guard

  31. 1mandawgpack

BahitsDawg MMCSDAWG PTCDawg  Being able to extend them to “push” a pass rusher off of his line and around the QB sitting in the pocket.
