Greg is closing in on 15 years writing about and photographing UGA sports. While often wrong and/or out of focus, it has been a long, strange trip full of fun and new friends.

That’s how the instructor teaches my daughter. Knob to the ball. He teaches the same swing to baseball players.

That’s the way it is though. It’s the umpire ‘s discretion of the strike zone

dsw61 DawgLink  The fastpitch swing can never be the same as the baseball swing due to a number of different factors.  First, in baseball, the mound is raised and the throw is overhand so the trajectory of the ball is always downward.  For fastpitch, the mound is flat and the throw is underhand, so the trajectory of the ball will virtually always be upward.  So, I get irritated listening to people who have no clue what they’re talking about.

That said, I think that there are a lot of people who got in on softball when it started in the South who don’t know what they’re talking about, but who have made a lot of money trying to convince people (mostly dads who played baseball part or all of their lives) that softball is totally different than baseball.  I taught my daughter how to play softball using all baseball fundamentals and, other than pitcher, she can play any position on the field and not be a liability.  I taught her how to catch (her primary position) and she never lets a ball by her as her fundaments in blocking are so sound.

I never played 1 day of soccer but taught my team in England how to guard, pass, move into space, etc. using basketball concepts and finished 2nd in the table the first year after forming the team from scratch.  2 of my girls are now on the U18 England national team and we all laugh how I get them started playing basketball on the soccer pitch. I taught them fundamentals and the mental aspect of the game and let their athletic abilities take over from there.  There are way too many coaches who don’t know how to teach the game, and therein lies the biggest problem with player development at most levels.

DawgLink  When I was growing up, they taught a very “lineal” swing with arms extended to get the barrel to the ball.  They now call that “casting” as it’s more of an outside/in swing.  Now, they’re teaching more of a rotational swing with the knob leading and staying compact (i.e., more of an inside/out swing).  In my opinion, the latter is clearly preferred as, if performed correctly, there should rarely be a check swing strike since, as the hips are exploding through the box, the hitter can simply lay the bat down on the shoulder for a pitch out of the strike zone.  Ultimately, not unlike most things, there can be several ways to swing the bat and the great hitters all get to the same position at impact.  My daughter plays travel and is just mashing the ball right now as she’s just now gotten strong enough to start driving the ball out of the park.  She hit a HR about 2 weeks ago where the ball never got more than 10 feet off the ground and was just a line shot over the center field fence.

dsw61 What drove me crazy is the umpires don’t give the strike at the bottom of the zone.  Yesterday against Auburn they wouldn’t give any of the pitchers that strike.  And if a ball was on the edge outside it was a ball, but a strike if it was 4-6 inches inside.   They were calling consistently for both teams though and I guess that’s all you can ask for.  Got to drive the pitcher crazy though.

Wonder if the Tar Heels will wear powder blue and we wear red jerseys in the Dome.

My daughter plays for Piedmont college. She has been going to hitting lessons for years. Instructor teaches short swing to the ball and finish. It only took one season at college for her coach to mess it up. He wants the girls to have a long swing. The team hit poorly. My daughter is back home and in lessons again. She is killing it again

Glad u like it link. But I can’t get into it. Too boring. I was only watching because UGA was in it.

DawgLink I was thinking more along the lines of hitting and pitching mechanics. Several years ago all the high profile fastpitch coaches in college and at the national level came out and said that the fastpitch swing should be the same as the baseball swing. The problem is that the coaches don’t know the key components of the baseball swing. Which is why you still don’t see a lot of swings like Katie Cochran in fastpitch. Bill Hillhouse has to turn the volume off when watching women’s fastpitch because the pitching analysis by the announcers is so bad. Every inside pitch is a screw ball…every outside pitch is a curveball…every high pitch is a riseball.

Well it was a goon run, hate it’s over. On the flip side I’m glad I don’t have to watch anymore softball. I don’t like it. I won’t be paying attention to who ever win the cws. Go dawgs!

We were at the US Open Championship for Sporting Clays. Shotguns and clay targets on a course sorta like golf with stations instead of holes where you shoot different presentations that vary from station to station. They say flooding is 127 year record on rivers near here. I’m sick of mud for awhile

  12. DawgLink

Indeed. Even worse is when they slight a team and build up the other one. They ate some crow in the Florida series

  13. dsw61

It’s been fun watching some of the fastpitch games. The announcers though drive me nuts with their analysis.

  14. DawgLink

It was fun watching them this year. And as said before, they made it further than they should have.

  15. DawgLink

I think that they have a few who red shirted but Idk who they will have coming in in August. A girl that we played against is supposedly coming. Lefty slapper. But a lot of the problem comes from the strange Glasco divorce. I mean all of them left

  16. Greg Poole

DawgLink  Yep. I guess they have already sign the next class, right? Any help there?

  17. DawgLink

It hasn’t been mentioned but personally I think that the change in team bats hurt this year. We went from Easton for the last 2 years to Miken. I can tell you from experience, the bat matters.

  18. DawgLink

Hard to fathom all the girls who are done and leaving. Hugo, Iosefa, Chelsea, Sam, Pualoia, Browne. That’s eye popping.

Greg Poole  She has been an all-American and led the nation in HR the past couple of years, but for some reason, has had a really tough Senior season.  They needed her to step up to really have a chance but it seems as if she has been a liability this year both in the field and at the plate.
