Today on Bulldawg Illustrated’s UGA Recruiting Daily we look at Georgia’s 2018 defensive line recruiting focusing on defensive tackle prospects.

UGA has one defensive tackle signee for 2018, Hutchinson Community College’s DeVonte Wyatt, and he was already at UGA and enrolled prior to Christmas and the Rose Bowl game. Wyatt was originally a 2017 signee out of Towers High School, Decatur, GA but was not able to qualify academically. He is good to go now after one semester at Hutchinson and will look to be in the mix of the competition this spring.

In addition to Wyatt, the Bulldogs also currently have two verbal defensive tackle commits in Mallard Creek High School’s Jordan Davis out of Charlotte, NC and Liberty County High School’s Tramel Walthour out of Hinesville, GA. Both players decided not to sign during the early signing period in December and will be doing so on Feb. 7th. There is always a chance that either Davis or Walthour could flip their commitment to another school between now and then; so, the defensive tackle recruiting these last 5 weeks could be interesting for Georgia.

And what makes so interesting is Concord High School’s Rick Sandidge out of North Carolina who has been a South Carolina lean seems to be taking a stronger look at Georgia now. Plus, there is Parkway North High School’s Michael Thompson out of St. Louis, Missouri who the Bulldogs are in play for, despite what you may see as for as crystal ball predictions at one of the recruiting pay site. So where does that leave Jordan Davis and Tramel Walthour?

With 20 signees there are five spots remaining in the 2018 recruiting class for UGA. If all three current verbal commits – Davis, Walthour, along with defensive back Rachad Wildgoose, Jr. – sign, then that means there are just… count them … two spots remaining. However, there is a good chance that not all three of those players will end up signing with the Bulldogs, but we will just have to wait and see.

TODAY’S FEATURED PROSPECTS

If position ranking is noted, unless otherwise stated, it is 247 Sports latest composite ranking of the player.

JACKSON CRAVENS

CLASS: 2018

POSITION: DL – No. 47 DT

HT, WT: 6 foot 3, and 280 lbs

SCHOOL: Timpview High School

CITY, STATE: Provo, UT

STATUS: Undeclared

UGA OFFER: Yes, offered on 08/06/2017.

# OFFERS: 21

NEWS & NOTES: Georgia offered Cravens on Aug. 6th and while Utah and Washington are both favored landing spots for the Timpview HS big man and several other Western U.S. programs have recruited him heavily, his recruitment is still wide open. Cravens listed the Bulldogs in his top 7 schools that he released on Twitter on Nov. 6th along with Arizona, Michigan State, Oregon, Utah, Vanderbilt, and Washington. He has taken one official visit this past fall that I know of and that was to Michigan State on Sept. 22nd.

He’ll be taking an official visit to Washington on Jan. 12th as well as Oregon Jan. 19th, and to Utah on Jan. 26th.

His tape looks good, and as a junior, Cravens had 160 tackles, 20 for a loss, and 13 QB sacks. Those are impressive stats, even if the competition isn’t as stout as some of the other high school classifications and regions around the country in states like California, Florida, Georgia, and Texas.

So can Cravens be one of the prospects at DT that Georgia adds to the 2018 recruiting class on Feb. 7th? Right now it looks like he is favoring Utah and Oregon, but you cannot count out Michigan State or Washington.

JORDAN DAVIS

CLASS: 2018

POSITION: DL – No. 28 DT

HT, WT: 6 foot 6, and 320 lbs

SCHOOL: Mallard Creek High School

CITY, STATE: Charlotte, NC

NEWS & NOTES: Jordan Davis is a big strong and talented defensive lineman out of the state of North Carolina who committed to UGA back on Nov. 16, 2017. Davis did not sign during the early signing period in December and plans on signing his LOI on Feb. 7th. He’s raw but has a huge upside. Similar frame to current UGA sophomore D-lineman Julian Rochester.

RICK SANDIDGE

CLASS: 2018

POSITION: DL – No. 10 DT

HT, WT: 6 foot 5, and 288 lbs

SCHOOL: Concord High School

CITY, STATE: Concord, NC

STATUS: Undeclared

UGA OFFER: Yes, offered on 01/19/2017.

# OFFERS: 23

NEWS & NOTES: Rick Sandidge was offered back in January by Georgia and included the Bulldogs in his top-11 schools on May 1st. UGA’s new D-line Coach Tray Scott recruited Sandidge when Scott was coaching the position group at UNC.

This has been a Bulldogs vs. Gamecocks battle with South Carolina having a big edge here for much of the fall. This football season, Sandidge has visited UNC on Sept. 9th and South Carolina on Sept. 16th, and he visited Columbia, SC again on Oct. 28th. Sandidge did take a visit to Athens on Nov. 4th for Georgia’s game versus the Gamecocks. He also took an official visit to Michigan on Nov. 25th. Right now, the only other official Sandidge has scheduled is to UNC on Jan. 19th. But at this point, it would be a pretty big surprise if Sandidge were to commit to and sign with another program outside of USCe or Georgia.

Is there any chance for the Georgia coaching staff to change his mind more in favor of Athens and the Bulldogs? Yes. He still has not announced his decision, and until he signs his LOI, there is a chance he could be swayed to UGA. He’ll likely be announcing his decision and signing his LOI all on the same day on Feb. 7th.

MICHAEL THOMPSON, JR.

CLASS: 2018

POSITION: DL – No. 2 DT

HT, WT: 6 foot 3.5, and 291 lbs

SCHOOL: Parkway North High School

CITY, STATE: St. Louis, MO

STATUS: Undeclared

UGA OFFER: Yes, offered on 03/02/2017.

# OFFERS: 25

NEWS & NOTES: Georgia offered Michael Thompson back last spring in March and since then, there hasn’t been much news about Thompson and UGA… at least until the early signing period last month. Could the Bulldogs be in the running to pick up the Parkway North High School D-lineman?

That is the scuttle butt on the street, but we will have to wait about five more weeks until Feb. 7th to find out. All his crystal ball predictions on 247Sports are to Missouri, and his most recent official visit was to the University of Missouri on Dec. 9th, which is at least his third trip to Columbia this fall. I don’t think he is as much a lock to the Tigers in Columbia as some analysts think, though. His recruitment appears to be much more wide open at the moment.

The only other official that Thompson has taken that I know of is to Southern California on Nov. 18th.

UGA OFFER: Yes, offered on 05/15/2017.

# OFFERS: 15

NEWS & NOTES: Tramel Walthour committed to Georgia back during the fall on Sept. 18th just after midnight with little fanfare. He had been a Bulldog lean even before UGA offered back last spring. Walthour is waiting till Feb. 7th to sign his National Letter of Intent.
