Greg is closing in on 15 years writing about and photographing UGA sports. While often wrong and/or out of focus, it has been a long, strange trip full of fun and new friends.

Greg Poole I do have to admire the cameraman for choosing the hard right (getting the shot) vice the easy wrong (helping a bro out) so we have an idiot to laugh at.

  2. Bulldawg36

Somebody should ask chip..what kind of beer did Kirby buy for Ledbetter!!!!! Hahahahahaha

  3. PTCDawg

Also, I could be wrong but I don’t think we have the information to be able to conclude that Ledbetter has an alcohol ‘problem’, serious or otherwise.

Responding to two questions/comments below. Its been stated that Carter and Thomas will be recording their commitments sometime today but they will not be broadcast until sometime between 8 and 11 on ESPNU.

Also, as far as earning a 5th star, if you are referring to the 247 composite, which is what I think most people use when they talk about a ‘consensus 5 star prospect’, keep in mind that there is no ‘awarding’ of stars, it is simply the highest 32 rated players based on the composite ratings of the various services. Gibbs is currently at 34, so if some service raises his rating enough to move him up 2 spots in the composite, by definition he now has 5 stars. OR, they could even drop the 32 and 33 players and he gets a 5th star without a raise in his rating at all.

Having said that, Gibbs is 34, LeCounte is 37, Fromm is 41 and Thomas is 49. Beal is 30 and Swift 31 so they would be in danger of losing the 5th star.

Avon Barksdale Agreed Avon. While I don’t think there is such a thing as a must get, I agree that AT is the most important recruit of all. This is because I think the OL is THE key to getting us to the next level, and the assumption that Salyer will follow Thomas. Getting a world class OT and the #1 G in the nation would go a long way to Georgia having a dominant OL.

Without knowing the young man, it appears that Ledbetter has an issue with alcohol and needs some help.  I actually applaud that our program holds these young men accountable for their actions, but I hope that we try to get him help before dismissing him from the team. If that is, in fact, the course of action that we take, Ledbetter will be walking a thin line for a while.

I agree that Chip went way over the line on his article.  I think what he’s trying to say, very poorly, is that it’s time for players to realize that football season is around the corner and it’s time to start focusing on those things that are going to help us win games.  As an example, I was the only one in my group of friends who played football and basketball in HS and even though most of them drank and partied every weekend, I really didn’t do so until the off-season as I knew the price I’d have to pay at practice for some bad decisions.  I agree with someone’s comment below that if Ledbetter has a serious alcohol problem, he’s likely not focused on the well-being of the team.  However, I do think it’s time for some of the leaders on the team to step up and put an end to some of this nonsense as it’s becoming a distraction to the team.  Camp can’t get here fast enough for me as keeping these guys occupied with football activities will decrease the time that they can find trouble.

  7. Bulldawg36

It’s not kirby’s fault that Ledbetter likes to drink. He didn’t tell Ledbetter to drive drunk behind the wheel. No coach can stop a player from drinking if that’s what he really wants to do.

  8. RobDawg

Yeah one of the throws to the front pylon was perfect and no one but WR could have touched it

  9. 1mandawgpack

Hobnailboot aka RobG  Other than the 2 expected for today, I don’t expect CKS to do anything as he knows that with the 2 commitments we’ve already gotten in July and the 2 additional that we’re supposed to get today, there is plenty of momentum to offset this unfortunate misstep by Ledbetter.

  10. 1mandawgpack

RobDawg  He’s been being recruited since the 7th or 8th grade by some big-time programs, so I can’t imagine that so many of these coaches who are paid big bucks to evaluate and develop talent would all miss that bad on the young man.  Also, while I imagine that HS runs over every team in Las Vegas, it plays a lot of the big time schools out of California (I watched them demolish the No. 1 team in the nation last year from somewhere in California), so they don’t shy away from other competition.
What I can say emphatically is that I’m thrilled to have Jake from State Fromm on our team as he’s a fine young man, a natural leader, and a winner.  It looked like he was just flicking his wrist last night and he was throwing BBs to WR 20 to 30 yards downfield.  While the announcers gave him a lot of love, I thought they were actually harsh on a couple of TD throws giving more credit to the WR than the throw.  Those balls were perfectly placed where on the WR could make a play and there was no threat for the DB making a play.  Honestly, it’s pretty amazing what he’s doing as he has spent most of the last 4 or 5 months concentrating almost exclusively on baseball and helping his team with the state championship.

  11. 1mandawgpack

BroDawg  I agree that Martell looked really, really bad last night.  However, this 7 v 7 format likely doesn’t fit his skillset well as I believe he’s a dual threat QB and his ability to run is likely what helps his passing game tremendously.  When this format neutralizes the run threat and it’s all about arm strength, accuracy and decision making, it’s naturally going to play to the type of QB we tend to want in a pro-style offense.  I’m not making excuses for the young man, but I personally don’t think that these all-star camps are the be-all, end-all with respect to a young man’s ability to be a stud football player.  He’s undefeated as a QB at Bishop Gorman high school in Las Vegas and that school doesn’t shy away from playing big-time games, and surprising to me, he’s also undefeated as a QB in his Bishop Gorman 7 v 7 team, which may have more to do with his teammates than his performance.  That said, a QB who has never been beaten is doing something right for sure.

Yeah Towers climbed way up on top of his high horse on this article. I found several of his comments to be ridiculous and sensational. Why try to pin the actions of these guys on whichever coach recruited them or is currently their head coach. That doesn’t mean a hill of beans to how players conduct their lives and make choices.

  13. DawgDaddy

DawgByte Bulldawg36 Me too, it was so much fun to watch Spurrier go out a loser against UGA.

  14. 66DAWGnNC

With that logic then I suppose when a non-athlete student is arrested they disrespect the University President, Professor, or___?

  15. Avon Barksdale

Andrew Thomas has been my #1 ‘must get’ prospect in this class. Super fired up to lock down his services for the next four years!!!

  16. Bansai buckeroo

Chip is wrong on this one… This is on Ledbetter….I’m not sure he even has a problem other than poor decision making….but again, I don’t know the kid….

  17. Hobnailboot aka RobG

If there are any silent commits right now does Kirby encourage them to make it public given this mornings negative press, Thomas excluded

  18. Hobnailboot aka RobG

DawgByte Greg Poole If I was Kirby I’d have BM yank any credentials from him

  19. DawgByte

Greg Poole “As it is, all these arrests say something about the discipline of the Georgia football team. But, to me, it’s says more about the football team’s attitude toward the young head coach.”

What Chip doesn’t realize is, when you have an alcohol problem nobody else matters. Ledbetter’s problem has nothing to do with Kirby. You can’t baby sit this kids 24/7. Ledbetter has to take control of his own life, which has nothing to do with program discipline. Chip is way out of bounds!!!

  20. BroDawg

I agree… he is another that could earn the 5th star.. I agree with @Rum below too..We don’t know what we don’t see. I know from what I saw with Tate Martell he looked a little like a deer in headlights with the speed he was seeing. Add pressure to the mix and who knows.

  21. rugbydawg79

How long has Ledbetters older brother been gone ? The one who started out as a basketball player, seems we brought him on to help get Jonathon, just wondering if this is a factor-big brother might have helped him – I agree Greg Chip is off base with this.

  22. RumRunnerDoogie

BroDawg kind of hard to say since they only show the games and not all the other things they do.  We will just have to wait for all the writers there to do write ups, i wonder if any UGA site writers are out there

  23. DawgByte

BroDawg How about Thomas? If he shows up big at the opening, why wouldn’t he get a 5th star. He’s ranked as the best OL in the state of Georgia. That ain’t chopped liver.

  24. Greg Poole

This is just wrong. Chip apparently thinks that multiple alcohol incidents suggest disrespect rather than an alcohol problem. Here is the point – if he was caught twice, he probably offended many moe times. The kid has a substance problem and turning it into a Kirby issue is just wrong.

  25. BroDawg

At the conclusion of the Opening what are the chances we see JF and RL earning that 5th star? I think RL is already listed as a 5 star by some… but does the Opening solidify his ranking across the board? Any other falls or rises that could impact recruiting rankings?

  26. Bansai buckeroo

BA….I think a lot of young people abuse alcohol…. I know I did. I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and hope that Kirby can make him see the light….
