UGA Vault Video: Alabama in Athens

[su_spacer size=”20″] It has been said that “a rising TIDE lifts all boats.” Well, that may be true in the preseason when the pundits are discussing the strength of Southeastern Conference football programs on the whole. But once the season begins, the Crimson Tide is hell bent on destroying any ship in their path.[su_spacer size=”40″] In the very recent past, Alabama has been the great buoy and measuring stick that has helped propel the SEC beyond any other league playing collegiate football. The Tide has an incredibly storied resume with several SEC and National Titles to their credit; a reflection of what all other programs hope to be.
[su_spacer size=”40″] The University of Georgia has a tremendous history all Its own. The Dawgs are right up there as one of the all-time winningest programs in the SEC and the Nation. Although the South’s Oldest Rivalry is the Georgia-Auburn series, the battles between Alabama and Georgia have created incredible moments and have recently held in the balance, a trip to the National Title Game.
[su_spacer size=”40″] The Classic City of Athens, Georgia will play host to only the 67th meeting in the history of these two celebrated programs; quite possibly providing a preview of another SEC Championship matchup and even helping in determining who might find themselves in the recently formed College Football Playoff. But with the Tide rolling into the Dawghouse to play Tween The Hedges, you can rest assured something amazing will happen!

[su_spacer size=”40″] DID YOU KNOW?
[su_spacer size=”20″] 1.) The famous flea flicker play, which led to the Dawgs’ 18 – 17 victory over reigning National Champion Alabama was the 1st televised game in Sanford Stadium.

2.) UGA was Alabama’s 1st opponent at “the Birmingham Fairgrounds (1905), Cramton Bowl (1922) in Montgomery and Legion Field (1927) in Birmingham”.

3.) Joe Willie Namath made his debut against the University of Georgia in 1962.

4.) “The Alabama-Georgia series did miss out on Herschel Walker and Shaun Alexander, two of the greatest backs in SEC lore.  The Crimson Tide and Bulldogs did not play from 1978-83, missing the Walker era. Georgia fans were denied the talents of Shaun Alexander as the Tide and Bulldogs did not play from 1996-2001.”

5.) From 1971 – 1982, the SEC Title was won by either Georgia or Alabama.

6.) UGA and Alabama have squared off in contests in SIX (6) different locations…

a.) Columbus, GA

b.) Montgomery, AL

c.) Birmingham, AL

d.) Tuscaloosa, AL

e.) Atlanta, GA

f.) Athens, GA

7.) Alabama vs. Georgia dates all the way back to 1895 and is the 3rd oldest series in Alabama history.

8.) The Dawgs have a less than stellar record against the Tide at home with a mark of 7 – 12. And the October 3rd contest in Athens will be only the 3rd visit to Sanford Stadium for UA since 1996.

9.) Coach Dan Magill was a member of the “chain gang” in 1946. He sprinted down the sidelines chasing after the great Charlie Trippi. Dragging a Bama fan along with him, this “DAMN GOOD DAWG” was instrumental in making sure that officials would from then on hold the yard markers!
