UGA vs Vandy Baseball: The sixth-ranked Commodores built an early lead and cruised to a 15-3 win over the Bulldogs on Friday at Hawkins Field.

The Commodores (32-10, 11-8 SEC) took advantage of a shaky first inning from Bulldog ace right-hander Robert Tyler to score four runs on two hits, four walks and a pair of wild pitches. Then in the third, Tyler was lifted during an eight-run outburst, as the Commodores sent 12 men to the plate. Vanderbilt got two-run triples from Tyler Campbell and Jeren Kendall to highlight the scoring. Alonzo Jones and Julian Infante collected three RBI apiece on the night while Bryan Reynolds scored four times and hit his SEC-leading 10th home run.

Sophomore Jordan Sheffield went seven shutout innings with six strikeouts to improve to 7-2 on the year. Tyler dropped to 3-4 after giving up seven runs (six earned) with six walks and five strikeouts in 2.1 innings. Sheffield has tossed 24 consecutive scoreless innings. A bright spot for the Bulldogs was the relief effort by freshman Trevor Tinder. He pitched 3.1 innings with six strikeouts, both career highs, and gave up a couple of runs in his final inning of work.

“We had 11 walks tonight and you can’t do that against a top 10 team,” Ike Cousins Georgia baseball head coach Scott Stricklin said. “We had a terrible first inning, then it looked like Robert might settle in and then the third inning we had to go to the bullpen. I thought Trevor Tinder stepped up and did a nice job. I told the team after the game, it’s time for everybody to step up when you have to make a play, or battle at the plate or on the mound.”

Georgia (22-21, 7-12 SEC) avoided a shutout, pushing across three runs on three hits and one Commodore error in the eighth. Freshman outfielder Logan Moody notched an RBI with a two-out, bases loaded walk and freshman catcher Michael Curry followed with an RBI-single. Junior right fielder Skyler Weber notched three hits, his team-leading 16th multiple-hit game. Georgia had one hit in each of the first seven innings before getting a couple in the eighth and ninth.

The Bulldog look to even the series on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 3:04 p.m. ET (SECN+).
