The Georgia volleyball team suffered its first setback of the season, falling 3-1 (25-20, 17-25, 23-25, 21-25) to Georgia Southern in the Georgia Challenge on Thursday night.
[su_spacer size=”40″] The loss put Georgia at 3-1 on the season while Georgia Southern moved to 3-3.
[su_spacer size=”40″] “I thought we were a little sloppy tonight,” said head coach Lizzy Stemke. “I thought Georgia Southern ran a really nice tempo and kept us chasing quite a bit. Through that chasing I think we got out of our routine, got out of our rhythm, committed a lot of net violations and had a lot of crazy errors because we were chasing quite a bit.”
[su_spacer size=”40″] Redshirt sophomore Amanda Dachs led the Bulldogs with her first double-double of the year, tabbing 14 kills and 12 digs. Redshirt junior Desiree McCray and sophomore Maddie Lobenstein followed with 11 kills each.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Sophomore Cassidy Anderson tied Dachs for the team high in digs at 12 while the Kentucky native also notched four service aces, tying her career high against Harvard last season.
[su_spacer size=”40″] The Bulldogs took the first set 25-20 behind a .332 hitting mark and 16 team kills. Dachs posted five kills in the early action off of nine attacks and no errors. GSU quickly evened it up, holding Georgia to a .069 hitting percentage and seven kills.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Out of the break, the Eagles took a close battle 25-23 before closing out the match with a 25-21 win in the final set. GSU was efficient in the third set, hitting .371 with two attack errors. Georgia held the early lead until tied at 12, a 4-0 run by GSU put the visitors in front for good. In the final set, under the serve of Anderson, Georgia rallied early to knot it at 7 each, but GSU’s 17 digs and three aces helped the Eagles to the win.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Georgia returns to the court on Friday for a pair of matches, taking on Mercer at 1 p.m. ET and Georgia Tech at 7 p.m. ET. All Georgia home matches are free admission while the first 250 students to the match against the Yellow Jackets receive a free emoji tank.
