Back in during spring practice, Georgia outside linebacker Walter Grant switched sides and was taking snaps at running back to help the team out. At the time running backs D’Andre Swift and James Cook were dealing with some injuries, Zamir White had not been cleared from having surgery to repair his ACL tear back in August of 2018, and Kenny McIntosh hadn’t enrolled yet.

At 6-foot-4 and 240 to 245 lbs, Grant was a load at the tailback spot, and Kirby commented back in the spring about the job the junior was doing.

“He’s done a hell of a job. I recruited Walter so I got to see Walter run the ball at Cairo,” said Kirby Smart. “We said ‘hey, who on our team can help us the most right now at tight end and running back.'” … “He’s really bright, picks things up, catches the ball well. He’s big, but he’s done a good job back there. It’s an experiment I would say.”

Fast forward several months, and Grant is back on the defensive side of the ball at OLB. During Thursday’s post-practice interview, Grant discussed his journey from defense to offense and back again.

“It is just another way to go out there and get a better look. Nothing has changed that much,” said Walter Grant. “It is always fun. Any way I can help my team, I am always looking at it as a way to get me better. It helps me help someone else get better. There is nothing negative about it.”

If that isn’t the definition of a consummate team player, I don’t know what is.
