ATHENS, Ga. — Donnetta Johnson, a guard from Queens, New York, has been named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday.
Johnson played a pivotal role in Georgia’s win against 13th-ranked Tennessee on Sunday, scoring five points in the third quarter. She nailed a 3-point basket to help her team climb back within six late in the game and also jumpstarted a 13-4 Georgia run against the Lady Vols.
The 5-foot-11 guard has started five of the last six games this season and has played in all 17 contests, helping to fill the void left by the injury to Que Morrison. Morrison, who was a 2018 SEC All-Freshman Team selection, suffered a torn meniscus before the season began and has been limited so far this year.
In Morrison’s place, Johnson has seen increased playing time during the conference slate. In addition to her game against Tennessee, Johnson scored five-straight points in the third quarter to trim Mississippi State’s lead from seven down to two points.
This week, Johnson and the Lady Bulldogs head to Missouri on Thursday for a 7 p.m. ET tip and will return home to host Texas A&M on Sunday at 4 p.m. ET.
