So far, over the past two weeks, we have been given access to “Period 2” of Georgia’s pad-less spring practice two times (and even got the chance to take pictures). Though it seems like there’d be a goldmine of information at these things, we’re actually left to make sense of flood of info. Coach Smart makes allows us see 15 minutes of individual position drills and a second of some intermingling between the skill positions.

Some of the biggest observations I’m able to pull from these open practices have to do with depth, and given the quarterback question every Georgia football fan and their mother is asking this offseason, I was able to pull just a little bit.

With three big-name gunslingers on the roster in Carson Beck, Brock Vandagriff, and freshman Gunner Stockton, there’s been a whirlwind of names that could be slotted into next year’s starting position. Beck leads, with many thinking it’s his spot to lose, and yesterday these observations gave further evidence.

Taking first, second, and third-string reps were Beck, Vandagriff, and Stockton, in order. At one point in the observation, Beck and Vandagriff were pulled aside to throw at receivers blanketed by defensive backs. It’s not much, but maybe it slots out Stockton and means these two are real contenders.

In an interview yesterday, star tight end Brock Bowers admitted that Beck and Vandagriff were “dueling it out.”

“It’s going to be a QB fight,” Brock Bowers said.

He didn’t reveal much else, but to be frank, he probably knows as much as we do at this point. These guys are too focused on their own practice to look at. One thing that’s becoming more apparent is that Stockton is probably not in the picture, but only time will tell for sure.
