What’s the Word? Q&A with Will Kahlstorf

Will Kahlstorf

It was a real treat for me to catch up with my friend and fellow Prince Avenue Christian School student Will Kahlstorf. In case you’ve missed it, the Athens native has been making waves in junior golf for many years. In fact, he was offered (and accepted) a spot to play for Georgia’s men’s golf program in 2019. Entering his senior year at our high school, what I like most about Will is he has remained humble despite his accolades. That will serve him well as he continues his pursuit to play at the next level.

Enjoy my conversation with Will …

WILL, TELL ME A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF AND WHEN YOU BEGAN TO PLAY GOLF.

Well, I’ve been golfing since I was two. I was just swinging at plastic balls with my plastic clubs in our backyard. Then, like a lot of kids, I played baseball. From the time I picked up a bat, I thought I wanted to be a Major League Baseball player. When I was around nine or ten, I started playing golf a little more, but I didn’t start playing in tournaments until I was twelve. While I was playing golf, I was still playing baseball, but in the eighth grade I quit baseball and began to really focus on golf.

CAN YOU DESCRIBE WHAT IT WAS LIKE TO GET THE OFFER TO PLAY GOLF FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA?

I really can’t put into words what it was like when I got the letter. All I can say is that it was really cool, and there is no other feeling than knowing that I will be representing the University I love.

SINCE THIS YEAR IS YOUR SENIOR YEAR, WHAT DO YOU WANT TO ACCOMPLISH IN THIS LAST YEAR? ALSO WITH YOU BEING A SENIOR AND HAVING MORE EXPERIENCE THAN YOU’VE EVER HAD, DO YOU THINK PRINCE CAN WIN STATE THIS YEAR?

I’d like to finish strong, make good grades, and set an example for the team. I think state is definitely attainable. All of the guys from last year are back, and they are looking really strong.

WHAT STANDS OUT TO YOU ABOUT GEORGIA THAT MADE YOU WANT TO COME HERE?

Just growing up and watching guys like Kevin Kisner, Brian Harman, Bubba Watson, and other guys on the PGA Tour was so cool. It would be pretty tough not taking advantage of the opportunity to do the same thing those guys have done. UGA is in my backyard and because I’m a bit of a homebody, I’m really glad it has worked out this way and I can stay here in Athens.

WHAT DO YOU ADMIRE ABOUT HEAD COACH CHRIS HAACK AND WHAT HE HAS ACCOMPLISHED AS A COACH?

Coach Haack is very competitive, and he’s made the men’s golf program an extremely strong competitor in our conference and nationally. His winning record is proof of his commitment to this program. Other strong competitors have faced Georgia and a lot of the time Coach Haack and Georgia have come out on top. He also does a great job recruiting. He is a great guy and has instilled many good virtues in men that have played under him. And obviously, he has put more guys on the Tour than any other coach, which is very exciting because that’s where I want to be.

WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE PLAYER ON THE TOUR RIGHT NOW AND WHY? IF IT IS NOT A FORMER GEORGIA PLAYER, WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE PAST GEORGIA PLAYER CURRENTLY ON THE TOUR AND WHY?

I’d have to say my overall favorite player on the Tour right now is Jordan Speith. I know it’s a bit bandwagon, but I have valid reasons. I love the way he carries himself. He’s probably got the best attitude on the Tour. In my eyes putting is the key to golf, and Jordan’s putter is pretty pure.

My favorite Georgia player on Tour would have to be Kevin Kisner. He’s been very successful recently. It’s cool knowing I actually watched him play when he was a bulldog.

ALONG WITH YOU, WHO WOULD MAKE UP YOUR DREAM FOURSOME, DEAD OR ALIVE? ALSO, IF YOU COULD CHOOSE TO PLAY ANYWHERE WITH THESE GUYS, WHAT COURSE WOULD YOU PLAY?

This is tough. Probably Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods. We’d have to play at Augusta National. I mean, it is golf heaven. There is no other course that compares. The feeling of walking down those fairways would be an indescribable moment.

WILL, I POSE THIS QUESTION TO EVERYONE I INTERVIEW. WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS FOR THIS FOOTBALL SEASON?

I’m hoping for all wins as is everyone. I do think we will have a pretty good season. We might have an SEC championship game appearance. Probably not the playoff season we all want but a good season.
