Brock Vandagriff (QB #12) – Athens homer and former bulldog Brock Vandagriff is back on the field with the Dawgs. This time, Vandagriff is on the opposite sideline of the Red and Black. After a solid start in their season opener, he had a rough showing against South Carolina last weekend, only completing three passes for 30 yards. Vandagriff also threw an interception, which eventually led to him being benched in the fourth quarter. Assuming he maintains his starting role, though, Vandagriff will fight to try to prove his former team they made the wrong decision.
Jamon Dumas-Johnson (LB #2) – Another former Dawg, Jamon Dumas-Johnson, will be leading Kentucky’s defense on Saturday night in Lexington. The senior linebacker has all he needs in terms of experience facing off against Georgia’s offense. He entered this season on the Butkus Award Watch List, awarded to college football’s best linebacker. Dumas-Johnson has six total tackles in just two games with Kentucky. Plus, he had an interception against Southern Miss. Knowing the opposing team’s tendencies can be crucial in the way JDJ approaches this game.
Deone Walker (DL #0) – This past offseason there were rumors of Deone Walker potentially entering the transfer portal. A team that absolutely would have targeted the talented defensive lineman would have been Georgia. Walker, after a poor first-game performance, recorded three total tackles in the Wildcat’s matchup against the Gamecocks. He has a massive 6-6, 340-pound build similar to that of ex-Georgia lineman Jordan Davis. This frame allows for Walker to be an immediate threat to any offense’s run-game.
Ja’Mori Maclin (WR #9) – This season, Ja’Mori Maclin has the second most receiving yards on Kentucky’s roster. He spent his first four years at both Missouri and North Texas. Moving to the Wildcats as a graduate transfer, Maclin has two years of eligibility left. He totaled for 1,384 yards and 13 TDs in his two seasons with the Mean Green. Lining up alongside Barion Brown, Kentucky has some weapons to be of Georgia’s secondary’s concerns. The question is: can Kentucky’s quarterbacks get them the ball?
Zion Childress (Safety #11) – His nine tackles make Zion Childress the leading defender in Kentucky’s first two games played. Starting out his career with Texas State, Childress now enters his third year with Kentucky. Fittingly, his first SEC start came against the Bulldogs in 2022. Since then, he has earned the starting safety role. Childress will likely be the best safety the Dawgs have faced yet. He has the chance to help Kentucky bounce back from last week’s devastating at-home loss.
Eli Cox (Center #75) – The head of Kentucky’s offensive line, Eli Cox, has played in 44 collegiate football games. Cox returned this year for his sixth and final season. Initially, he played guard but switched to center at the beginning of the 2023 season. With 35 straight starts, Cox has been named on various watchlists, and he was named Second-Team All-SEC last year.
When it comes to bluegrass basketball legends, Cliff Hagan is at the top. A two-time All-American and NBA standout, Hagan led Adolph Rupp’s Wildcats to the 1951 NCAA title.
Legendary Atlanta Falcons center Jeff Van Note, a six time Pro Bowl selection and member of the team’s Ring of Honor, is one of Kentucky’s most famous football alumni – especially in Georgia.
Kentucky’s new Head Basketball Coach Mark Pope, who was on Mark Fox’s staff at Georgia, was a member of the Wildcats incredible national championship team of 1996 that went 34-2.
