Caliya Robinson, a junior forward on the Georgia Lady Bulldogs basketball team, has been named to the 2017-18 Citizen Naismith Trophy Watch List for National Player of the Year, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced on Wednesday.
This is just the latest honor for the Marietta, Georgia native who was tabbed Preseason All-SEC and one of just 20 players nationwide to be named to the Katrina McClain Award watch list, which recognizes the top power forward in the country.
“This is a tremendous honor for Caliya,” head coach Joni Taylor said. “Our goal and Caliya’s goal for this season is for her to come in and be a consistent leader for our team. She is someone who has all the potential in the world, and so far this season she has stepped up and really matured both on and off the court. To be named one of the top 50 players in the nation is a remarkable accomplishment, and I am looking forward to watching her grow even more this season.”
Robinson has now scored in double figures in 13 of her last 16 games dating back to last season and averages nearly a double-double over that time frame.
Most recently, the 6-foot-3 junior moved into ninth place in the Georgia record book for career blocks with 135 total, doing so in just 62 career games. This past Monday, Robinson become one of just eight active players in the SEC to have over 500 career points, 400 career rebounds, and 100 career assists.
The Citizen Naismith Trophy Watch List will be trimmed down to a midseason list of just 30 players this February.
Robinson and the Lady Bulldogs are in the midst of a busy week, which includes a home matchup against Furman on Thursday at 7 p.m. ET before a home date with No. 2 Texas at 4 p.m. ET Sunday.
