Lady Bulldog basketball freshman and San Antonio, Texas native Gabby Connally scored 37 points – the most by a Georgia freshman since Tasha Humphrey in 2005 – to help lead the Georgia women’s basketball team to a 92-84 win on the road in College Station, TX at No. 16 Texas A&M Sunday afternoon.

 

Connally’s performance ranks among some of the best in Georgia’s storied history and is only third behind Lady Bulldog greats Coco Miller (45 against Charleston Southern in 1997) and Janet Harris (39 versus Valdosta State in 1982) for most points scored by a Georgia freshman in a single game.

“Gabby lives for these moments,” head coach Joni Taylor said. “We want the ball in Gabby’s hands. She can drive, she can score and she can make things happen. We put faith in her and she delivered today in front of so many friends and family who made the trip. I am happy for her and so proud of our team for fighting to get a big road win.”

The Texas native hit four 3-pointers as Georgia finished with 12 overall – just one shy of the school record 13. In addition to Connally, junior forward Caliya Robinson finished just two blocks shy of a triple-double with 18 points, 19 rebounds and eight blocks.

“Coach Taylor tells me to be more aggressive, and today I was able to do that,” Connally said. “I had some open looks and my teammates told me to just let it fly. We know it is never easy to come down here and get a win so I am so happy for this team.

Robinson scored six of Georgia’s first nine points to help her team build an early 9-4 lead with 4:49 remaining in the first quarter. Mackenzie Engram added three 3-pointers within the first 10 minutes of the game to give Georgia a 19-9 lead at the end of one.

Connally hit a triple on the Lady Bulldogs’ first possession of the second quarter, but Texas A&M followed with a 10-0 run to get within three. Robinson broke the scoreless streak with a putback basket, which was followed by another Connally 3-pointer.

Georgia finished the first half with eight 3-pointers and held the Aggies to just 31-percent shooting to hold a 38-31 lead at the end of the first 20 minutes. By the time the two teams went to the locker room at the half, Robinson had a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds.

The Lady Bulldogs got into foul trouble and the Aggies went on a 6-0 run over a span of just 48 seconds in the third quarter to inch closer. Texas A&M used another 8-0 run at the end of the third period to take just their second lead of the game – 54-52 – at the end of the period.

The Aggies built as much as a five-point advantage in the fourth quarter, but Connally led the Lady Bulldogs back with six points in the final 10 minutes. In fact, Georgia led by three points with under 10 seconds to go, before Texas A&M freshman Chennedy Carter nailed a triple to send the game into overtime.

Georgia powered past the Aggies in overtime to pick up its first-ever win in College Station. The Lady Bulldogs now have a week off before hosting Auburn at 3 p.m. ET next Sunday.
