Opening Tip – Notes To Know Heading Into Sunday

 
Fresh off a 64-61 win at Virginia, the Lady Bulldogs return to the state of Georgia this Sunday with a trip to Macon to take on the Bears at 2 p.m. ET. Mercer, coached by former Georgia women’s basketball student-athlete Susie Gardner (1983-86), also has an unblemished record this season with wins against UCF, Florida Atlantic, and Georgia Southern.

Georgia picked up an impressive early-season road victory Thursday evening. The Lady Bulldogs built as much as a 14-point lead to down a Virginia squad that returned most of its players from a 20-win team a season ago. Georgia was paced by Caliya Robinson’s 15 points. Mackenzie Engram threw in 13, freshman Gabby Connally scored 10 and redshirt-sophomore Taja Cole tossed in a career-high nine assists.

Through the first two games this season, Georgia has been aided by strong performances from both its newcomers and veteran players. Returners Robinson, Engram and Stephanie Paul are all averaging double figures in scoring. New faces Que Morrison, Connally and Cole have also played pivotal roles in Georgia’s 2-0 start. Morrison is averaging 13.5 ppg (including a team-best 4-for-9 mark from the 3-point line), while Connally, a perfect 6-for-6 on free-throws, is averaging 8.0 ppg and Cole has dished out 15 assists, an average of 7.5 per contest.

A year after playing with just eight scholarship players, Georgia has seen added depth this season. In wins against Wofford and Virginia, 10 different Lady Bulldogs have scored with all of those players averaging over 10 minutes played per game.

Robinson has now scored in double figures in 11 of her last 12 games dating back to last season. The Marietta native is just two blocks away from moving into ninth-place on Georgia’s career blocked shots records.
