Opening Tip – Notes To Know Heading Into Tuesday
Georgia and No. 2 Texas clash in a marquee matchup as part of the 2017 Big-12/SEC Challenge. Sunday’s contest between two unbeaten teams tips off at 4 p.m. ET and will air nationally on the SEC Network.
Texas, ranked No. 2 in the Associated Press poll and fourth in the USA Today coaches’ poll, represents the highest ranked non-conference opponent to come to Stegeman Coliseum since 2004. Ironically, it was then No. 2 Texas that traveled to Athens the second game of the 2004-05 season. Eventual National and SEC Freshman of the Year Tasha Humphrey scored 27 points (24 coming in the second half) to take down the Longhorns, 78-64.
These two women’s basketball powers have met seven times, with Georgia owning a 5-2 lead in the all-time series. The last meeting came at the 2005 NCAA Tournament in Dallas, Texas. Behind 26 points and 10 rebounds from Humphrey, the Lady Bulldogs advanced to the Sweet 16 for the third-straight year.
The Big-12/SEC Challenge features every team from the Big 12 against 10 squads from the SEC. The format consists of five home games on campus sites for each conference. Half of the contests feature at least one team that was ranked in the final 2016-17 USA Today coaches’ poll.
This year’s Georgia team features a blend of veteran faces with a strong group of newcomers. Caliya Robinson, a Naismith Trophy Player of the Year watch list and Katrina McClain award watch list honoree, leads the Lady Bulldogs in both scoring (13.0 ppg) and rebounding (7.3 rpg). Newcomer and redshirt-sophomore Taja Cole is second in the SEC in assists (5.7 per game), while freshmen and five-star recruits in the 2017 class — guards Que Morrison and Gabby Connally — rank third and sixth respectively among Georgia’s top scorers.
