Opening Tip
Georgia and Georgia Tech are set to meet in a key early-season matchup Sunday afternoon at Stegeman Coliseum. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET on the SEC Network.
The Lady Bulldogs own a 34-5 lead in the all-time series against Georgia Tech. Georgia, which owns a perfect 15-0 record against the Yellow Jackets in Athens, has won five of the last six meetings between the two programs.
Georgia is led by the veteran frontcourt tandem of Mackenzie Engram and Caliya Robinson. Engram leads the team with 12.6 points per game and has scored in double figures in eight of nine contests to begin her senior season. Robinson is second on the team in scoring (12.2 ppg) and ties Engram for the team lead in rebounding with 6.9 boards per game.
The Lady Bulldogs enter Sunday’s contest ranked second in the SEC in assists (17.4 per game) and in the top half of the league in assist/turnover ratio and turnover margin. Newcomer Taja Cole is a big reason for Georgia’s backcourt improvement. The redshirt-sophomore leads the conference in assists (5.6 per game) and is fourth in assist/turnover ratio (50 assists, 20 turnovers). Cole has also improved her scoring this season and has set a new career high of 15 points in road wins at BYU and at North Carolina A&T.
Robinson has received early season recognition. The preseason All-SEC selection was named to the Citizen Naismith Trophy National Player of the Year watch list as well as the Katrina McClain Award watch list for the top power forward in the country. Robinson ranks among the SEC’s top-10 returners in scoring, rebounding and blocked shots.
