Marjorie Butler, the starting point guard for the Georgia Lady Bulldogs, who has already been accepted to several prestigious medical schools across the country, has been named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) District 4 All-Academic Team and is now a finalist for the Academic All-America program.
 
 
Butler, who has started each of Georgia’s 24 games this season and is third in the SEC in assist-to-turnover ratio, will graduate with her second degree from the University of Georgia this coming May. The Knoxville, Tennessee native, who already has a degree in exercise science, currently sports a 3.81 GPA in biology.
 
 
The aspiring orthopedic surgeon has already been accepted to some of the top medical schools in the nation, including the University of Virginia, Vanderbilt University, University of Florida, UAB, Meharry (Tenn.) College and East Tennessee State University.
 
 
“Marjorie Butler is the epitome of the term student-athlete” head coach Joni Taylor said. “She has worked extremely hard to be where she is today, and it speaks so well of her character, commitment and attitude that she is able to take some of the hardest courses offered on our campus, go through very difficult medical school interviews and still rank as one of the top point guards in the SEC. Marjorie is a phenomenal person, and I know she will be successful in whatever she seeks to do in life.”
 
 
Butler began her career at Georgia with 47 AP college credit hours, entering school academically as a college junior. She developed into UGA’s starting point guard a season ago, starting 28 of 31 games and playing nearly 27 minutes per contest.
 
 
During the 2015-16 campaign, Butler has established herself as a leader for the Lady Bulldogs. In addition to her phenomenal assist-to-turnover ratio, Butler ranks sixth in the SEC in total assists with 97 and has recorded five or more assists in 18 games this season. Butler enters action this week after playing 40 minutes in back-to-back wins against then-No. 20 Missouri on the road and vs. Ole Miss at home.
 
 
This marks the second-straight season that Butler has earned Academic All-District honors. She is now a finalist for the Academic All-America Team, which will be announced on March 3.
 
 
Three Lady Bulldogs have earned national Academic All-America accolades from CoSIDA. Bernadette Locke was a second-team selection in 1981; Kelly Miller was a third-team pick in 2000 and a second-team honoree in 2001; and Coco Miller was a third-team choice in 2001.
