Earlier this afternoon, the University of Georgia Athletics Department welcomed its newest addition: women’s basketball head coach, Katie Abrahamson-Henderson (“Coach Abe” for short).

Having just coached the University of Central Florida women’s basketball team to the second round of the 2022 women’s bracket, Coach Abe now finds herself back in Athens where she played from 1986 to 1988 before transferring to the University of Iowa, back in her home state.

Coach Abe said she prides herself in the defense and physicality that her teams play with. And it’s worked. Athletic Director, Josh Brooks, praised her for her ability to build winning programs from the bottom up. Coach Abe currently has a winning record of 372-157 and plans on adding onto that record in the years to come.

Speaking of the future, Coach Abe has already prepared for recruitment for upcoming seasons. During a press conference, she mentioned that she had been called by multiple AAU coaches (in reference to recruiting). She emphasized her ties within the state of Georgia, Florida, and New York making sure the media understood that she had ties all across the country.

During her introduction at Stegman earlier today, Coach Abe flashed aspects of her electric personality. While her speech was pre-written, on multiple occasions did she go off script to work the crowd. In her short time in Athens, she’s clearly made herself comfortable.

Coach Abe brings her winning practice to a historically winning program. While she still appears to be getting acquainted with her team, basketball fans should already be impressed by her and her accolades. The Lady Bulldogs should expect no dropoff under Coach Abe as there is plenty of evidence showing that she has the ability to bring teams to the postseason.
