Georgia freshman forward Caliya Robinson has been named the SEC Freshman of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Tuesday.
The honor represents the second Freshman of the Week accolade this season for the rookie from Marietta, Ga. Robinson has played a pivotal role during the Lady Bulldogs’ current four-game win streak, averaging 10 points per game and 5.5 rebounds per contest during that span.
“Caliya has really stepped up and been a big time player for our team this season,” head coach Joni Taylor said. “She has so many attributes that you look for in a player and has the ability to affect the game on both ends of the floor. Over the last few weeks she has really come into her own and played a crucial part in so many big games for us. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for Caliya.”
Robinson played a particularly large role in helping the Lady Bulldogs down No. 20 Missouri on the road last Thursday, en route to their fourth win over a ranked opponent this season. The 6-foot-3 forward hit 6-of-10 (60 percent) from the field and recorded her second double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds against the Tigers. In the fourth quarter, Robinson helped jumpstart a 22-4 run in the final 10 minutes as she hit 2-for-3 from the field, recorded four rebounds and dished out three assists down the stretch of the final period.
Against Ole Miss on Sunday, Robinson set a career high with five blocked shots as she helped Georgia to its fourth-straight win of the season — the first time the Lady Bulldogs have won four in a row in SEC play since the 2012-13 NCAA Elite Eight team accomplished the feat.
Robinson and the Lady Bulldogs are off this Thursday, but will hit the road on Sunday to face LSU in Baton Rouge, La., at 3 p.m. ET.
