The No. 5-ranked Georgia women’s golf team grabbed a share of the first-round lead following a 5-under 283 in the opening day of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic on Sunday. Bulldogs Bailey Tardy, Harang Lee and Manuela Carbajo Ré are third, fourth and fifth, respectively, on the individual leaderboard.

 
“It was a great start,” head coach Josh Brewer said. “Any time you can break par as a team and have 60 percent of your lineup in the top-5 of a field, that’s exactly what you like as a coach. We still have some things to work on. We know we left a few shots out there.”
 
Tardy, Lee and Carbajo Ré all posted red numbers for Georgia. Tardy carded a 4-under 68, while Lee shot 69 and Carbajo Ré notched a 70. The Bulldogs also counted a 76, the score signed for by both Jillian Hollis and Rinko Mitsunaga.
 
“We played about the same yesterday in the practice round so I thought there was a chance for a good round, but with it being the first competitive team round of the year, you’re not sure how you’re going to respond,” Brewer said. “It turned out well and it was all throughout our lineup. Manuela qualified as our No. 5 person and she shoots 2-under and the top of our lineup was a little bit off today. It’s great to know that we have five golfers who can win the golf tournament.”
 
Tardy teed off from No. 1 on the shotgun start and immediately birdied her first hole. She turned at even after posting seven pars and a bogey at No. 6. Successive birdies at No. 11, No. 12 and No. 13 pushed Tardy to 3-under. She gave one of those strokes back with a bogey at No. 14 but immediately regained that shot with a birdie at No. 15 and finished her day with another birdie at No. 18.
 
Lee began her loop at No. 3 and got hot around the same location at Tardy. Lee was 1-over through her first seven holes but went birdie, birdie, bogey, birdie on holes No. 10-13 to move to 1-under. She added two more birdies at No. 17 and No. 18 before completing the day with two pars.
 
Carbajo Ré started her round with a birdie at No. 4. Additional birdies at No. 9, No. 12 and No. 13 moved her to 4-under. She bogeyed No. 18 but then birdied No. 2 to return to 4-under only to suffer a double-bogey on her closing hole, No. 3.
 
Georgia is tied with No. 25 Texas Tech on the team leaderboard at 283. Trailing the Bulldogs and Raiders and rounding out the top-10 teams are No. 8 Arkansas at 290; No. 6 Northwestern and N.C. State both at 291; No. 9 Kent State at 293; No. 18 Iowa State and Louisville both at 294; Augusta at 296; and TCU at 299.
 
Texas Tech’s Gabby Barker is the individual leader at 6-under 66, a stroke better than Rachael Taylor of N.C. State followed by Georgia’s trio of Tardy, Lee and Carbajo Ré. Hollis and Mitsunaga are tied for 46th, while Isabella Skinner, who is competing individually, is tied for 84th at 84.
 
Georgia will be paired with Texas Tech, Arkansas and Northwestern for Monday’s second round, teeing off on holes No. 1-4 at 8 a.m. ET. Live scoring is available via birdiefire.com
