Freshman Jillian Hollis covered the first two rounds of the Mountain View Collegiate at 11-under 133 on Friday, pacing the No. 5-ranked Bulldogs to a 6-under 570 team tally.
Hollis earned a nine-stroke lead on the individual leaderboard, while Georgia has a eight-shot edge in the team field. The Bulldogs opened with a 6-under 282 and followed that with an even-par 288.
Hollis was the day’s big story, however. She signed for a 6-under 66 in the morning and a 5-under 67 in the afternoon. Hollis enters Saturday’s final round one shot off of Georgia’s school record for a 54-hole tournament score. Classmate Bailey Tardy set that standard in the fall en route to winning the Windy City Collegiate with a 12-under tally.
Rounding out Georgia’s counting tallies in the first round were a pair of 2-under 70s from Harang Lee and Tardy and a 76 from Sammi Lee. In the afternoon, the Bulldogs’ counted Hollis 67, an even-par 72 from Tardy, a 73 from Sammi Lee and a 76, the score posted by both Rinko Mitsunaga and Harang Lee.
With the shotgun start, Hollis teed off from No. 11 for both rounds. She opened her day with a birdie and notched two more at No. 14 and No. 15 to reach the “turn” at 3-under. Following her lone bogey of the first round at No. 2, Hollis posted four consecutive birdies at Nos. 6-9 to reach 6-under on the day. She posted par at No. 10 to complete her initial loop, one shot off the school record of 7-under 65 by Vicki Goetze in the final round of the 1992 NCAA Championships.
Hollis bogeyed No. 12 and No. 13 early in the second round but birdied No. 15, No. 16 and No. 17 to move to 1-under. Another bogey at 1 put her at even, but birdies at No. 3, No. 6, No. 7, No. 9 and No. 10 supplied Hollis with her second score in the 60s on the day.
Overall, Tardy is in a pack of four golfers tied for second at 2-under 142. In addition, Harang Lee is tied for 15th at 146, Sammi Lee is tied for 33rd at 149 and Mitsunaga is tied for 67th at 155. Mary Ellen Shuman, who is competing as an individual, it tied for 69th at 156, including a hole-in-one at No. 4 in the first round.
No. 16 Iowa State is eight shots behind the Bulldogs at 578, followed by No. 22 Missouri at 581; UT-San Antonio at 582; New Mexico State at 586; Purdue at 588; San Jose State, Ohio State and Colorado State all at 590; and Minnesota at 593.
