Freshman Katarina Jokic advanced into the round of 32 in singles and in doubles with senior Mariana Gould Wednesday at the Oracle / ITA National Fall Championships.
With her latest singles victory, Jokic improved to 19-2 this fall. Seeded sixth, Jokic dispatched UCLA junior Ayan Broomfield, ranked No. 52, 6-2,6-0. On Thursday, Jokic will face Stanford’s 69th-ranked Emily Abruthnott.
The Jokic-Gould tandem received a wildcard into the doubles field and promptly ousted the top seed in Duke’s Ellyse Hamlin and Kaitlyn McCarthy. The Blue Devil duo, ranked No. 25, claimed the fall’s first grand slam event, the All-America Championship. The Jokic-Gould team forced the Blue Devils to a third set super tiebreaker and emerged with a 3-6,6-1,10-8 victory. The Bulldog pair improved to 11-2 this fall. They will play in the round of 16 Thursday.
“Mariana and Kat had a great win over the number one seed,” said Georgia coach Jeff Wallace. “After a slow start, they came on strong and played smart.”
Meanwhile, the Bulldog tandem of sophomore Elena Christofi and freshman Morgan Coppoc, ranked 34th nationally, earned their spot in the round of 16 after defeating the 22nd-ranked North Texas duo of Maria Konova and Tamuna Kutubidze 6-3,6-0.
“Elena and Morgan also played some high-level doubles,” Wallace added. “Everyone has big opportunities Thursday, and we’re looking forward to getting back out on the courts.”
Georgia’s other two entries in the singles, Christofi and Marta Gonzalez, dropped their opening round match. Christofi, ranked 10th, was upset by North Carolina sophomore Alexa Graham in three sets. Graham, ranked 42nd, rallied past Christofi 5-7,6-3,6-1. Gonzalez, ranked No. 105, forced 27th-ranked Felicity Maltby of Texas Tech to three sets before falling 7-5,3-6,6-3. Gonzalez is now 15-4 this fall while Christofi is 6-5. Both will compete in the consolation draw.
