[su_spacer size=”20″] ATHENS—–Georgia’s Caroline Brinson eliminated fifth-ranked Josie Kuhlman of Florida Saturday to highlight main draw action of the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

 

Brinson, who is ranked No. 72, posted a 7-6(5),6-1 win to oust the No. 2 seed. Meanwhile, Bulldog sophomore Kennedy Shaffer will join Brinson in the quarterfinals after she outlasted Ariana Rahmanparast (Florida State) 3-6,6-1,6-2. Brinson now faces Kennedy Sunday at 10 a.m. with a trip to the semifinals on the line.

 

“I got up 5-3 in the first set, and I started to think about winning the first set, and she made a good comeback,” Brinson said. “Once I got in the tiebreaker, I refocused and played my game, playing aggressive and having fun. That was my mindset, and I got on a roll. Today was the biggest win of my career.”

 

“She has a good serve, a good volley, and is a good competitor,” Shaffer said when asked to give a scouting opponent on her upcoming quarterfinal foe/teammate.

[su_spacer size=”40″] Florida duos swept through the doubles action Saturday, and the Gators have all four teams in the semifinals. The top-ranked duo of Austin/Keegan defeated No. 51 Brinson/Hannah King (UGA) 8-4. In the other three quarterfinal contests, No. 54 Kuhlman/Woolcock upset 16^th-ranked Shaffer/Silvia Garcia (UGA) 8-4; Danlina/Morgan ousted Borthwick/Noi (FSU) 8-6 and No. 55 Liang/Porter upset seventh-ranked Hourigan/Woodward (Ga. Tech) 8-5.

 

On Sunday, play will begin at 10 a.m. with the singles quarterfinals of the main draw and consolation singles with the semifinals of the singles main draw no earlier then 2 p.m. The doubles semifinals will follow in the afternoon.
