Georgia continued play in the Sunshine State on Friday, competing in three singles matches and two doubles matches at the Clay Court Invitational.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Laura Patterson was again one of the premier performers for the Dawgs, again claiming a singles and a doubles victory on the day.
[su_spacer size=”40″] “It’s great to see Laura playing well,” said Associate Head Coach Drake Bernstein. “She comes to practice with a great attitude every day and it’s fantastic to see her work paying off.”
[su_spacer size=”40″] Senior Silvia Garcia, ranked 58th, joined her in advancing on the day with a gritty 6-4, 6-2 win over Florida State’s Gabriella Castaneda, ranked 81st.
[su_spacer size=”40″] “Silvia gave a great Bulldawg effort today not feeling well and got it done in straight sets over a ranked player,” Bernstein said. “She definitely set a great example for how we want to compete day in and day out.”
[su_spacer size=”40″] Patterson’s doubles pair with Caroline Brinson also advanced with an 8-5 victory, while the pairing of Mariana Gould and Kennedy Shaffer fell 8-1. Ellen Perez also was knocked out of the tournament by a 6-3, 7-6(5) score against Clemson’s Theresa Piontek.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Kennedy Shaffer, ranked 37th, scored a consolation match victory over Jocelyn Treyes of FGCU in straight sets.
[su_spacer size=”40″] “As a team we made improvements on where we were at yesterday,” Bernstein said. “We look forward to doing the same tomorrow.”
[su_spacer size=”40″] Georgia will be back in action on Saturday morning.
