[su_spacer size=”20″] Georgia’s Caroline Brinson and Kennedy Shaffer enjoyed a productive showing Friday in main draw action of the ITA Southeast Regional at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

 

The top eight seeds all advanced in doubles including Georgia’s No. 3 seeded team of Shaffer and Silvia Garcia along with the No. 5 seeded pair of Brinson and Hannah King. The Garcia/Shaffer team cruised to an 8-2 win over the Georgia Tech tandem of Natasha Prokhnevska and Alexis Prokopuik. The Brinson/King duo dispatched Nina Nagode and Maryna Veksler (FIU) 8-3. The top seed and nation’s top-ranked duo of Brooke Austin and Kourtney Keegan (Florida) defeated Tarani Kamoe and Lara Vovk (Ga. State) 8-5.

 

In singles, the top 16 seeds all made it through the first round and then nine advanced to the round of 16. Brinson and Shaffer, both among the alphabetical seeds, were the only two Bulldogs out of six in the field who won a pair of matches to move in to the round of 16. Brinson, ranked No. 72 nationally, defeated Nina Nagode (FIU) 6-1, 6-0 and then ousted Ana Madcur (Miami) 6-4,6-0. Up next, Brinson will face the No. 2 seed and fifth ranked player in Josie Kuhlman (Florida). Shaffer, ranked No. 37 nationally, eliminated Linn Timmermann (Ga. State) 6-4,6-2 and then coasted past Vera Bessonova (USF) 6-0,6-1. Up next, she faces Ariana Rahmanparast (Florida State). If both Bulldogs win their round of 16 match Saturday, they would meet each other in the quarterfinals.
[su_spacer size=”40″] [wonderplugin_slider id=”32″] [su_spacer size=”40″] “There was a lot of great tennis today, and we did some things well and still have certain areas we need to work on,” Georgia coach Jeff Wallace said. “Caroline and Kennedy won their doubles match and came back and won a couple of singles matches to complete a good day. There’s more tough singles and doubles to follow here. It’s not even close how deep this regional is compared to others around the country. The field is full of ranked players and some are not even seeded.”

 

Garcia, King and Mariana Gould fell in the round of 32 while Laura Patterson dropped her round of 64 match. The Gould/Patterson duo fell 8-5 in the opening round to Danilina/Morgan (Florida).

 

Saturday’s schedule will begin at 10 a.m. with the doubles round of 16 and quarterfinals and then consolation singles (for first round losers only). The main draw singles round of 16 will not start before 2 p.m.
