The team played two doubles matches against players from Michigan and two against players from Clemson. All six singles matches were against players from Princeton.
“We had a great start to the weekend here at Windward,” said Associate Head Coach Drake Bernstein. “There were times in doubles that we could have played better, but we certainly know what we need to do better moving forward.”
The Bulldogs saw some different doubles pairings from earlier in the fall. The new combinations of Kennedy Shaffer-Laura Patterson and Silvia Garcia-Mariana Gould each won their competitions. Shaffer-Patterson defeated Jenny Moinard and Ally Miller-Krasilinikov by a 7-6 (5) tally. Garcia-Gould won 6-1 over Kara Hall and Teona Velehorschi of Michigan.
Caroline Brinson and Hannah King, ranked the No. 51 pair in the country, went 1-1 on the day by beating Fernanda Navarro and Daniela Ruiz of Clemson but falling to Michigan’s duo of Ronit Yurovsky and Brienne Minor.
“In singles, we played good, clean tennis across the board,” Bernstein added. “It was fantastic to see Kennedy save a match point and win her match today. This is the third tournament in a row that we have had a player come back from match point down to win. I think that says a lot about the way we compete.”
Shaffer, who is ranked 37th in singles play, saved match point down 5-3 in the third set en route to a 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 victory against Princeton’s Nicole Kalhorn. Only one other singles match went the distance, with Garcia prevailing against Amanda Muliwan of Princeton by a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 tally.
The Bulldogs will be back in action tomorrow for day two of the Windward tournament starting at 9 a.m.
