An impressive five Bulldogs combined to take home five flight titles from the team’s first round-robin tournament of the fall, the Puerto Rico College Challenge.

Overall, the team took home three singles titles as well as two in doubles play.

“I think that all of our players played some really good tennis down there,” said Head Coach Jeff Wallace. “Ellen (Perez), Silvia (Garcia) and Caroline (Brinson) winning their flights, I thought it was well done. I feel like you look at Ellen, who had the opportunity to get the big win, and other players had some ranked wins. That’s what you get the chance to do in these tournaments.”

The trip was highlighted by sophomore Ellen Perez, ranked No. 29 in the country in singles play, defeating No. 6 Stephanie Wagner of Miami in straight sets en route to a perfect 3-0 weekend and a Flight One title. She was joined as singles flight winners by senior Silvia Garcia, ranked No. 58, and junior Caroline Brinson, No. 72, who won flights three and four, respectively. Each also went 3-0 with a ranked win on the weekend.

Garcia also took home the most wins in doubles for her flight as she paired with sophomore Kennedy Shaffer to go 2-1 on the weekend. Garcia and Shaffer are ranked 16th in the country for doubles. Brinson joined Garcia in the two-title ranks, as she and sophomore Hannah King won flight three in doubles. The Brinson-King pair is ranked 51st.

“It was a good chance to go down there and take what we could from that tournament,” Wallace added. “Now we take that back to practice and keep learning and getting better.”

The Bulldogs will compete in the ITA All-American Championships in California next week. Information on Georgia’s player draws will be available before the team leaves for tournament play.
