The Georgia women’s tennis team registered 12 wins Saturday in fall tournament action at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

Georgia duos claimed three of four doubles matches to start the day and then went 9-3 in singles competition. The Bulldog combinations that notched a win included sophomore Elena Christofi and freshman Annette Goulak, freshman Katarina Jokic and senior Mariana Gould along with senior Laura Patterson and freshman Vivian Wolff. Overall, Christofi and Jokic tallied three victories apiece Saturday, two in singles and one in doubles.

In singles, Jokic earned an impressive win, beating 63rd-ranked Fernanda Contreras 6-2,6-4 and then knocking off Daniel Ruiz (Clemson) 6-2,6-1. Christofi, ranked 10th nationally, rallied past freshman Amanda Meyer (Vanderbilt) 2-6,6-3,6-3 and then dispatched Tate Schroeder (Clemson) 6-3,6-0.

“We had a great day and that’s what we needed because it was super hot, everybody was battling at a high level,” said Georgia head coach Jeff Wallace. “Our team responded well, first in doubles and then through two rounds of singles. I’m looking forward to Sunday’s matches. It’s important for our freshmen because they need to play matches. There’s nothing like competition because it provides good information for the coaches and the players.”

Due to hurricanes that have impacted the Caribbean, Georgia is now playing host to the Puerto Rico Fall Classic. The three-day round-robin that began Friday event features singles and doubles action with student-athletes from Clemson, Missouri, Vanderbilt and the host Bulldogs.

On Sunday, play begins with doubles at 10:00 a.m. Admission is free.
