Georgia senior Lauren Herring and assistant women’s tennis coach Drake Bernstein each received ITA regional awards, the association announced on Tuesday. Herring was named ITA Southeast Region Senior Player of the Year and Bernstein was tabbed ITA Southeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year.

For Herring, the award is yet another honor that she can add to an already distinguished career. The Greenville, N.C., native recently picked up her fourth-career All-American honor and was earlier this season named First Team All-SEC for the fourth year in a row. The senior award is also a fitting bookend to the ITA Southeast Region Rookie of the Year honor that she received as a freshman back in 2012.

Currently the nation’s No. 5 ranked singles player and member of the No. 11 ranked doubles team (Ellen Perez), Herring has played to a 21-6 record in singles and a 20-9 record in doubles this season. She will lead her team into Waco, Texas, this weekend for a round of 16 matchup with Michigan at 1 p.m. on Friday.

Bernstein’s accolade is the first of an assistant coaching career that has spanned the past three seasons with the Bulldogs. A former NCAA Champion (2008) and Second Team All-SEC selection (2011) as a player on the Georgia men’s tennis team from 2008-2011, Bernstein can now add the ITA Southeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year honor to his trophy case.

His contributions to the program have helped guide the Bulldogs to appearances in the NCAA Championships during each of his three years with the team, and his recruiting prowess was evident this past offseason in the capture of five freshmen that have featured in the Georgia lineup. Two of them (Kennedy Shaffer and Ellen Perez) were named to the SEC All-Freshman Team and another (Hannah King) earned SEC All-Tournament honors.

The Bulldogs’ record during Bernstein’s time as assistant is an impressive 70-15. He and head coach Jeff Wallace will look to improve upon that record when they lead the team into Waco this weekend.
