There is no hiding how much talent is on the Georgia women’s tennis roster; there is a reason Georgia was the No. 3 overall seed. The team put that on full display on Saturday beating Wake Forest 4-1 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, despite not dominating to the extent they have during most of the season.

“I think it’s good for us,” said Georgia head coach Jeff Wallace on being challenged. “This team just fights and finds ways to get it done.”

Georgia started by taking the doubles point, winning its matchups on courts 2 and 3. Elena Christofi and Morgan Coppoc won their set 6-2, while Lea Ma and Meg Kowalski won their set 6-3. Ma was also the first singles winner of the day, taking care of her opponent Anna Campana in straight sets. Marta Gonzalez followed that up with a straight-set victory of her own.

Katerina Jokic, the SEC player of the year, lost her first set in a tiebreaker on court 1. Jokic battled back to win the second set but did not get to finish her match. She remains unbeaten on the season in singles play.

Wake Forest began to compete on almost every court after that. Kowalski learned that the hard way, losing her match in three sets after winning the first set 6-0. However, Coppoc played probably the most flawless set of the day to clinch the victory on court 4 four Georgia. She won the deciding third set 6-0 with all eyes on her.

The crowd was as big as it has been all year according to players like Ma. The Dan Magill Tennis Complex was almost filled to the top as fans in Athens seem to realize that something special might be brewing with this team.

“Amazing crowd,” said Wallace. “I was thankful to be able to play here. That would’ve been a much tougher match anywhere on the road. The crowd was epic, really loud, a lot of people, it was super exciting.”

Georgia now moves on to Orlando, Florida where they will face No. 14 Virginia. The Bulldogs will have over a week off, as the round of 16 games kick off on May 16.
