Meg Kowalski, who went a collective 4-0 with two match clinchers for the No. 2-ranked Georgia women’s tennis team this past weekend, has been named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday afternoon.

Kowalski has yet to lose a singles match in her collegiate career and her two most recent wins increased her unblemished record to 13-0, including nine dual matches. Both singles wins clinched the team match, holding off No. 15 LSU, 4-2, and then completing the 4-0 sweep of No. 21 Texas A&M. Additionally, she picked up two doubles victories, one of which clinched the doubles point, while playing with junior Marta Gonzalez.

Against the Tigers, the match score was at 3-2 with only two courts left when Kowalski outlasted Tiger sophomore Luba Vasilyuk 7-5 in the first set and then turned it on in the second set, winning 6-1. Heading into the match, Vasilyuk was 15-3 overall with an undefeated 10-0 dual mark.

Earlier versus LSU, Kowalski and Gonzalez handed Paris Corley and Taylor Bridges their first conference loss, 6-4, to clinch the doubles point for Georgia. At the time of clinch, the last remaining court was knotted at 5-all between UGA’s No. 74 Lourdes Carle/Katarina Jokic and LSU’s No. 3 Eden Richardson/Jessica Golovin, the defending NCAA Doubles Champions.

Two days later on Sunday against the Aggies, Kowalski and Gonzalez defeated Riley McQuaid and Lucia Quiterio to make the Georgia duo 3-0 in dual play. In singles, Kowalski capped the 4-0 sweep, handing sophomore Dorthea Faa-Hviding her first dual loss and broke her nine-match win streak. The clinch marked Kowalski’s third of the season.

The weekly award is the seventh edition this season and the second honor for the Bulldog freshman as she garnered the Week 3 accolade following her performance at the ITA Indoors.
