Three Georgia women’s tennis players – Katarina Jokic, Marta Gonzalez, and Lourdes Carle – have received bids for the individual portion of the NCAA Championships, it was announced Tuesday evening.
Jokic and Gonzalez each picked up at-large selections into the NCAA Singles Championship, while Jokic and Carle nabbed an at-large spot in the NCAA Doubles Championship. Carle has also been chosen to be the eighth alternate in singles.
The NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships will occur May 20-25 after the team competition at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida. The singles tournament features a 64-player field, while the doubles consists of a 32-team format.
Jokic earned the No. 2 seed and will participate in the NCAA Singles Tournament for the second-straight year. The sophomore from Novi Grad, Bosnia holds a 19-4 overall singles record, which includes 14 ranked wins. The First Team All-Southeastern Conference recipient has been ranked No. 1 in ITA singles for the past seven polls.
Gonzalez, a junior from Madrid, Spain, will make her first appearance past the team portion of the NCAAs with her unseeded bid into the singles championship. Sporting a 21-11 singles mark with 11 ranked wins, Gonzalez also was named First Team All-SEC. Gonzalez, ranked No. 25 in ITA singles, enters postseason play needing one win to set a new career-high win total for a single season.
In doubles, Jokic and Carle fueled their run into the national radar with three ranked wins in the SEC Tournament, including one against the then No. 1-ranked duo from South Carolina. Overall, the Bulldog twosome, ranked No. 30 in ITA doubles, went 9-5 together at the No. 1 doubles court throughout the dual season. This marks the second year in a row that Jokic will compete in the NCAA Singles and Doubles Tournament following team play.
Georgia has had a contingent in the singles competition now for 34-straight years, while doing so on the doubles side for 11 years in a row.
After earning the No. 1 seed Monday night, Georgia’s women welcome Alabama State, Austin Peay and Wake Forest this weekend for the NCAA First and Second Round. The action starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday as Austin Peay and Wake Forest face off at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. The Bulldog women will then host Alabama State at 1 p.m. later that day. The winner of both matches will meet at 2 p.m. on Sunday for a spot in the NCAA Super Regionals.
Tickets for first and second rounds in Athens are $5 per day for adults and $3 per day for youth (college age and younger). All tickets can be purchased at the gate beginning one hour prior to the first match each day.
